    Strange Electrical Gremlin

Firstly, g'day to you other LR tragics.

I have a strange electrical situation with my 1989 Rangie and I'm hoping someone here may have had a similar issue, although it's seeming rather bizarre to me.
The headlights work, but the tail and park lights have stopped working, strangely, so have the rear fog lights.

There is power at the switch, 12.54V distributed as it should be by moving the switch to each selection, but there is only 0.6V at the fuses and bupkis at the sockets.
The reading at the fuses does not appear to be an aberration, because both read the same value and that reading drops to zero when ignition is switched off.
The rear fogs have full power at the switch and the fuse, but again nothing at the sockets.

I would be grateful for any constructive suggestions or advice.

Have you checked the wires from the fuse to the sockets? How about the earth connection to the sockets?

There's a chance the fuse is fine and either the wires have been clean cut/ a connector has come loose/poor earth.

I would be looking at the earth points , my front fog lights didn't work but the backs did , a new earth wire solved the problem .

there are others better than me at these cars but that was my experience.

    Cheers Ean

Re : 0.6V at the fuses and bupkis at the sockets.

    Yep, please explain bupkis?

Aaahh, Google is my friend. Ya learn something new every day, well you do if you are me.

Bupkis comes to us from the Slavic languages by way of Yiddish and literally means "beans", but not in an appetizing way. The beans referred to are actually small pellets of animal droppings, which is perhaps appropriate given the common usage of the word and its generally negative connotation. Gradually the literal meaning has left it and bupkis has evolved into slang meaning "nothing".

Have you checked the switches? It has a weird swithc on the steering column... one way turns on only the parkers, and the other way turn the headlights on. The indicator/light swithc is also a dodgy piece of ****. Infact if you buy a new one .... The quality is absolutely appalling. You will be lucky to get a few months out of it before it fails.

I would start with the switch!

    Maybe .

Have a look at the Relays ..
The switch should turn on the relays and the relays supply the power to the actual lights.

    Thank guys for your replies.👍

Switch is a brand 3 position rocker, the genuine LR replacement was something silly like $145, so I got one from the local autosparky for $12.

As to the relays, that's a question on it's own.
I can't find out which is which, I only have a Haynes manual, which is a frustratingly incomplete waste of paper other than for torque settings etc.

As to earth, that is my main suspect as the parker bulbs have a history of going black. My problem there, something I am tackling today, is that the only wiring diagram I have is in the Haynes, and the wires disappear into the loom with what appears to be a common main earth somewhere else.

Rego is still 3 months away but in the interim I can't drive at night until I find the culprit.
    The search continues.🙄

You absolutely need a copy of RAVE because the electricals in these cars is so out of whack You're bound to be confused - and even with the ETM, you'll still be scratching your head muttering obsceneties.

Well, good news and bad news.

    Good news, problem solved.

Bad news it appears I'm a numpty.

After weeks of pestering LR mechanics and autosparkies, you guys and anyone who would stand still long enough, it was my own laziness that caused it.

For some reason, when I connected the new switch, instead of soldering all the connections as usual, I twisted one together. The connection had come loose but not pulled out of the insulation tape.

    @Mercguy:
What is RAVE? I thought that was a venue for millennials to dance themselves into an sweaty coma.

Thanks to all for your help.👍😁
