What year is it? Assuming it has the LT230 transfer case if you have a prop shaft out and you have the centre diff lock engaged?

280km from 55 litres isn’t far off the mark for town work - around 19 LP 100KM. Can get down to 15’s or so, some claim much better than this but not in mine - it’s been in the family for decades and it’s always been around that.

200km is bloody aweful...

So, a bit more info - year, etc would be a good start. If it’s Efi it could be as simple as a sensor.

93. It’s got a borg Warner viscous transfer in it. Was seized so they removed the front prop before I got it. Last tank I did the lights came on at 196. When I drove it interstate previously a full tank of about 80L would get me around the mid 300 mark. Could probably get it down hopefully with a service and plugs leads etc. but yeah, 200 and under is just bad. On the highway I would measure it would do just around 100km per quarter tank. It seems to be much less in the city sometimes. 50km to a quarter or so

akso it’s got stock wheels, stock size tyres. No bull bars or aftermarket exterior bits.

edited my above post sorry. First tank on highway when I got the car was 190km. That said the wheel nearly fell off. Most I’ve gotten on a highway is around 320-340I think. I normally remember being just under 1/4 at 280km

at what point should the light come on anyway? Mine seems to come on around 1/4 tank now. So when I fill it up takes around 53-60L. So if it’s an 81l tank that leaves 20 odd in there.

On a good day on the hwy mine will get 250 - 270 from 58 litres............. but that's a 350 and the fuel is lpg. About 220 around town.

It'll get a bit over 400km out of a tank of petrol, can't remember how much because it's been so long since I tried.

Checking that your fuel return line isn't blocked is one simple place to start.

Year? Engine? A little bit of info would help.... Is servicing up to date?

93. 3.9 with 320k km. So understand if it’s a little tired. Have most of its history and previous owner did a fair amount of maintenance work on it (although more on cooling system and drivetrain in the last year. )

It is EFI. You are best to go through the EFI troubleshooting steps in the manual or have someone do it for you. This makes sure that all components are working. There are a bunch of things that could be off.

As above make sure the fuel return is not blocked. Check MAF. Check O2 sensors. Make sure air filter is clean.

You should be 14 to 18 l/100 km.

Out of interest I thought I would check my old Rangie consumption spreadsheet.
1993 LSE 3.9EFI with 138L tank:
Data collected over 471 days and 18,222km. Driving included high country low range stuff, country trips and city driving (but very little peak hour commute).
Km/l: 4.57
l/100km: 21.89
MPG: 12.9
Range: 584.63 (138L tank).

As a matter of interest, when I converted it to an HS2.8 diesel, the average was 13.5 l/100km. Power was about the same as the 3.9 but of course the torque was double.

And my TD5 LSE averages 11.5L/100 km or about 24 mpg (over about 16,000 km)
