Thanks guys. I’m not so concerned what has changed on the outside. I can see the differences. And conveniently i have a bog standard 1973 RR next it it in the shed for comparison! However, I did crawl under the suffix A tonight to get some dimensions:
1971 with auto
LT95 length: 470mm
Front prop shaft: 780mm
Rear prop shaft: 750mm
1973 standard
LT95 length (excluding bellhousing): 470mm
Front prop shaft: 640mm
Rear prop shaft: 850mm
So I am confident that the main LT95 housing is intact externally. It’s what is going on inside that I don’t know. There is an adapter plate bolted between the bw35 and the lt95.
Here are some more photos of what it looks like. You can see the adapter plate between the two boxes.
New prop shaft boot needed!
This looks like good news.
Even if the LT95 has the gearbox part completely gutted, provided there's no "damage" done to shaft journal bearing bores (on that front section plate), you may very well be in the clear, so long as you have the necessary donor parts for the box and the propshafts. Even if there is damage to the replaceable bits, so long as it's not the casing, you're OK.
all the cosmetic stuff can be repaired, it's that matching numbers case that you want in-tact.

Yes, promising! I guess until I pull it all apart, I won’t know for sure what can be saved. But at least it sounds like it is worth persevering with the original gearbox. It will certainly add some time and complexity to the project. I am in no hurry though. At my time of life with 4 young kids at home, I have pretty low expectations on the pace of the restoration. The hope is that the kids will be able to help at some point.
Here is a photo of the 71 (Tuscan blue) along side my 68 IIa shorty and the 73 (bahama gold). All three powered by the venerable Rover 3.5

Yeah, shed is still pretty new. I’m stoked with it! I haven’t had a chance to set it up yet. All in good time I guess...
