    Hi Blokes,
Has anybody on the forum found an successful way of replacing the rear main seal without removing the motor and or gearbox (auto)?

    REAR MAIN SEAL?

Yep, bugger. What year is it? Early versions are much easier as the floor unbolts and the front rad support panel also unbolts so the whole engine, trans and TC can come out the front in one go with pretty easy access to everything that need unbolting - that’s the way I did mine and it was easier than the engine I have pulled from an early Disco which is essentially the same as a late RRC.

Thanks for the heads up mate but unfortunately, no it is a 1986 model, looks like I will have to start work on the 4.6 replacement which has been on the project sheet for a few years now.

Given its an auto ..... I"d probably just put a drip tray under it and add more oil to the top as needed

It took me 3hours yesterday to get that motor back in yesterday. I had that bloody motor in and out 3 times to check the clutch alignment (again) ..... I made bloody pins out of long bolts to try and help. In the end I was swinging off the engine crane, shaking the :cussing: out of it in frustration .... and the damn them engaged finally.

I watched an episode of roadkill last year to see how this works for everyone one else. They were lowering a new v8 down into a mustang, and there was a loud "rattle .... CLUNK" ..... and they all stood around and said "I think it just installed itself ..... Look at that, it did, put a bolt in to hold it together".

Mines an 86 but the last of the Carby’s - everything unbolts. I know the later 86’s had the flapper EFI and not sure what happened with the body’s then.

auto should be simpler. If he pulls the motor, remove the engine mounts, and drop it down as far as you can. I needed to bend a spanner to get to the two top bolts. The rest you can get to from underneath (use a 3/8ths ratchet with a stack of short extension bars --rather than a single long one) as it'll allow more flex. Not a fun job (especially if you have put a firewall blanket on there).

The problem with pulling the motor is all the "while I'm here" expenses ... eg: gaskets, seals, welch plugs, engine mounts, exhaust and flange gaskets ..........etc.
