They talk about something called an LT230Q here. I wonder if this is what I've ended up with.



The gears are quite different an they reckon a lot weaker over on that forum. Oh well, we'll see how it works out in time

I've heard stories of the Q gears. Never seen one in person.
Images would convey the change in tooth count to reduce whine.

when you increase tooth count on helical gears or involute gears for the same diameter, the root becomes weaker.

Yes, you can manufacture out of better material, and in racing that would work - because you'd be doing regular inspection/testing.

on a vehicle designed to carry load and do long intervals between services... meh.

Some people can't abide the noise. You'll see them pondering about.

If you have the chance to swap it for a non q box, then maybe. but why not just install it and let it brak in it's own time, then replace it if required.

Some people hav no issues with theirs, so I can only imagine there is *some* kind of omission of mechanical sympathy, or there truly was a batch of faulty gears / hardening etc.

You'd have thought though - by now most of those failed units would be long scrapped.

I'll put the car back up on the ramps tonight and check the serial number to see what I have. I need to chekc the oil levels now the car has been driven around a bit and try to hook up the handbrake able (that is currently just to short in adjustment to hook up. I hope there is adjustment there 'cos I'm betting I have a Disco 2 cable and adjuster there.

I have a LT230Q .... I really like it. I was always going to upgrade to 24spline disco diffs to get rid of all the driveline lash (which there is LOTS of!). I'll be damned, 95% of the driveline lash has dissapeared like magic with this transfer case.... And it IS much quieter (even with no console in and a big hole in the floor where the gearshift gasket goes). I reckon its as refined as the borg warner transfer case ... but I'd need to drive one back to back with this to verify.

Those with automatics probably don't really notice the driveline lash. Well throw some "L" plates in the thing and let your daughter drive one with a manual gearbox and see how you go

Yes - but irrelevant if a) it had excess strength anyway or b) changes were made to other factors such as the alloy used etc.

My impression is that the LT230 is extremely robust and can withstand far more power than any of the factory engines attached to it. Of course that does not mean it can't be broken if you go rockhopping with 36" tyres and a lead foot!

She'll be right mate ...... She hasn't driven it much other than around bush tracks. I need to fit another indicator switch to it (you have to hold it on around corners) ... that's the 3rd dead one I have here now. The drivers window has jammed and I need to swap a new mechanism in .... and the heater fan has died. The heater fan is a bugger, as its a BIG job to pull that out. I'll do that this weekend if the weather is so bad I cant start throwing up the leanto.
