Only lt230 as standard transfer case no other option at that time.
There were however different ratio gears in the lt230 depending whether auto or manual. I had an 85 with 308 conversion but still retained 727. The Viscous coupling was a later borg Warner transfer case around 1990 chain drive version.
The auto was either a Chrysler torqueflite 727 or a borg Warner auto at that time

    Higher, 1.003/1 high range.
Torqueflite was the only factory auto prior to the zf.

It will bolt up to an LT77 which the original box would have been but not sure on the R380 as I’ve never worked with one but my guess is that it would.

Which box are you talking about? Personally I wouldn’t use an LT77 as they aren’t the strongest but for normal driving they are fine. Heavy towing or serious off road work could bring them unstuck.

find a damaged disco 1 for its driveline. I woldn't fit an R380 unless you can test it in the car. If you buy one used, throw a rebuild kit through it. There is very good youtube videos on how to do this.... .and make sure you have an LT230 with a cross drilled input gear (guess why I suggest this )

By the sounds of it he has a 1.003:1 transfercase (14D from memory), which won't have a cross drilled input gear, but easy enough to remove and drill it.

R380 is the best LR box of you want 5 speeds.
