Hi all,
I have to replace or refurbish the door hinges on my 86, can anybody suggest the best way to go about this eg:- replacing the hinges with new ones or replacing the hinge pins or any other suggestions?
They are the exposed type hinges.
Regards:-

I had a friend who worked /ran the Navy workshops in Sydney make up Monel oversize pins.
AFAIR the pins were made a bit oversize and then Knurled each end and the holes drilled to suit for an interference fit.

Monel is a group of alloys of nickel (from 52 to 67%) and copper, with small amounts of iron, manganese, carbon, and silicon. Monel is not a cupronickel ...
Monel 400 · Monel 404 · Monel 405 · Monel K-500
People also ask
What is Monel used for?
Monel is used for marine engineering, chemical and hydrocarbon processing equipment, valves, pumps, shafts, fittings, fasteners, and heat exchangers. It is also used as part of metal instruments and frames of eyeglasses.

Before you go too far with this.............. get someone to lift the door while you watch how much the steel door frame flexes at the bottom hinge.
I assume you have a 4 door? Mightn't be as bad as a 2 door.
I'll have a look tomorrow how much movement mine (2 door) has, but the doors shut perfectly just with the bottom hinge shimmed.
cheers, DL
Hi Patrick,
All 3 RRC's I've owned (74, 77 & 80) had the bottom hinges shimmed.
The pic below is the PS door, 80 body on 74 chassis, shimmed both sides of the hinge. Can lift the end of the door maybe 25mm while watching the door frame flex.
Both doors shut fine with neat panel spacing.

The shims look to have been made professionally for this purpose.

I can remember a post years ago (either on aulro or outers) where someone actually made up braces and installed them in the doors to get rid of the flex.............. a bit OTT.
cheers, David L.
Hi. 350
Thanks for your input.
I have checked out the shims, yep I found them and can't work out why I didn't think of them earlier, I have been mucking around with these RRC's for years and thought I had a good basic knowledge of what goes with them.
Sometimes it can be a case of the more you learn the less you know.
