Thread: Engine Number

Hello All,

I picked up a Range Rover 3.5 litre V8 motor a couple of days ago. The engine number looks like 47A07767B

Stamped above that is another code that could either start with a "G" or a "6"
For example, GR9 35 1 or 6R9 35 1

Can anyone let me know the purpose or meaning of the top series of letters and numbers?

Is it CR (not GR)

CR = compression ratio?

47A , A is usual to a Rover car .

Range Rover with this type , 3rd indicator is a D .

Land Rover would be a G .

Factory that number is likely a 3.9 ltr and the last B is likely telling it has 10 bolt heads .

A usual 3.5 ltr has 14 head bolts .

Our 84/5 RR has its 3.5 bits fitted on a 4.0 ltr crossbolt block with 10 blot heads , when fitted it had 14 bolt heads it is using its 3.5 V belts but factory for this block is serpentine or ribbed belts this ls only to indicate that many combinations of Rover v8 parts are possible .

Looking at your pic it has 14 bolt heads , the bottom row as shown in the pic are not installed and it is wearing composite head gaskets , if it were a 14 bolt block ( which it needs to be to be a 3.5 ltr , though UK military had 3.5 ltr 10 bolt special order ) you would be able to pierce through where the lower head bolt is not and it would go deeper than the thickness of that part of the head .

When i think about the last of the 3.9 in a 93 RR had 14 bolt heads and tin gaskets but that number is nothing similar .

Hello PLR,

I checked a number of online Rover V8 engine identification sites and I am starting to think that the engine is not as described in the advertisement. It seems that my propensity for accidentally buying quirky motor vehicles or motor vehicle parts is continuing.

Hello All,

One of the results I found on a Rover V8 engine number identification reference site was this finding...

The number that the engine has is 47A07767B

Factory 3.9 Litre Engines
47A00001 Morgan +8 9.35:1 CR EFI
Accessed 4th of October 2022 from Rover V8 Engine Numbers

Can anyone else find a V8 engine number site that might identify the source of the engine and its specifications.

That is a credible engine number site - so you already have the information you are after. A 3.9 Hi Comp engine that was fitted to a Morgan. The basic engine will be the same as other 3.9s of the period - Morgan did not generally make performance improvements so the engine should be able to be fitted to LR products of the same period.
