    Rear half shaft drama

My 1990 3.9l RRC with ABS has stripped the half shaft splines at the hub on the rear O/S.
10 spline diff and 24 spline hub.

I recall a post about 4 years ago where someone did same and could not find a replacement part anywhere. He was right and after I thought I had a breakthrough and found one listed online at Craddock's, I paid $835 plus $80 freight they got back to say "no longer available". Lost $100 on the refund due to bank fees and currency flutuations I guess.

So I'm assuming I'll have to change the diff to a 24 spline one and seek a shaft with 24 splines at each end? Plus a replacement left hand side half shaft as well to go with it
Can anyone please advise me if this is the right way to go and if so what is the right diff to get that will bolt straight in, use existing tailshaft etc? I'd plan to get a used one and have it reconditioned.
Only other idea I had was to get one manufactured from a drawing with specs but with my layman level of skill would be sure to end up an expensive dud.

Les Richmond Automotive in Melbourne list Hi-Tough Engeneering axels for 10 spline RRC.
    Part no.
    HTE571882/3
    HTE3186/87X

I don't know if either of these are suitable for your RR

    From HTE Axle Sets

I don't know what the difference is, but IIRC from when I bought mine 15 years ago, the X denotes a longer spline in the drive flange.
That doesn't explain the very different part no.

I think MR Automotive in Brisbane do Hi-Tough if you prefer someone more local to you.

Try calling MR Automotive in Brissie. They make the MaxiDrive axles. They may have them or may make one for you (preferably a pair - one each side).

    Hi Ron,
Hi-Tough Engeneering took over the axle side of Maxi Drive.

MR Automotive took over everything else.

But I assume MR Automotive would stock the axels.

^^ OK, I did a bit of work for KLR last year and I ordered the Maxi-Drive axles off MR. When I was chasing orders, I rang MR.

Thanks Tony and Ron for your advice.

I spoke to Les Richmond Automotive and was advised that fitting the HTE upgraded axles was something of an overkill into a "weaker" 10 spline diff. Also that there are probably none available for 10 spline diffs as is very limited demand. Their advice was to source a 2nd hand 24 spline diff from a Discovery (I assume would be a D1 or D2????) and then fit the 24 spline axles.

By the time I found a diff and paid $300 to $400 for it, took a chance that it was ok and hadn't done over 300k already (or paid for it to be reconditioned) then bought the HTE 24 spline axles at $935 with freight I'm looking at some serious dollars to replace one half shaft. Les Richmond is followiung up to see if the 10 spline shafts are still available.

Sure is becoming a saga. . I see that Britishautoparts in Melbourne have rebuilt D1 24 spline diffs for $1595 plus freight. They also list a right hand rear half shaft for D1 10 spline diffs (FTC3186) for $220. These have a different drive flange that looks like it's integral to the axle shaft. Would anyone know whether that would fit a RRC hub without any problem (eg with end float)?

    Pity.

I could have sent you 10 spline axles and diffs.
