As mentioned earlier, connecting a live positive DOES get fans to work so that suggest that the blower motor itself has not failed (comments please)

That leaves the slide switches as about the only remaining source of the problem other than a broken wire somewhere that I cannot find. I have just ordered a replacement (aftermarket) from Sparesbox for $42 including postage- a much better price than most others online. Wish me luck
Are you talking a late soft dash? The earlier cars have two completely different fans. the A/C system is separate and runs separate fans (located above the passenger front footwell).

    Model details

No - it is not a Soft Dash. It is a 1991 High Line.

I have checked all of the fuses and relays under the left side kick panel, as well as those under the right hand front seat. The relays were tested by an experienced auto electrican.

The air con worked for longer than the heater by several weeks before it stopped blowing air without warning

    Wiring colours

Hope someone finds this useful. It was on the Graeme Cooper website until I got fired as the webmaster (after only 15 years too)

    Wiring Colour Code Table
Many British designed vehicles use colour coded cables to assist in identifying the various circuits in use. This is an extract from BS-AU7a 1983 Colour Code for Vehicle Wiring, from the British Standards Institution, 2 Park St., London W1A 2BS.

(Note that these colour codes may not apply directly to older cars. For example, the wipers on cars up to 1980 (at least) are not on a separate fuse circuit, so they are not orange, but green. Check the schematic for your car to be certain. - cak)

Many of the usual suspects carry Lucas bullet connectors. A few carry reproduction wiring harnesses. But very few carry the properly color-coded wire, and most of those only carry a small selection of colors and sizes.

However, there is one place that I've found that carries the whole gamut:

    British Wiring Inc
    20449 Ithaca
    Olympia Fields, IL 60461
    (708) 481-9050 voice & fax
They have every color combination listed above, in lots of sizes, as well as connectors, clamps, lamp fixtures and other random bits and pieces that you'll need. I've been very happy with the products I receive from them. Be warned that wire is often backordered and may take a couple of weeks to arrive. They have a nice catalog that's free.

Another place that carries a wide variety of hardware and harnesses is

    Rhode Island Wiring Service, Inc.
567 Liberty Lane, PO Box 434
    West Kingston, RI 02892

    Which wires go where?

    91 Hi-line heater/aircon fan switch

The slide switch has 5 terminals - 2 in the top row, 3 in the bottom row

    https://www.aulro.com/afvb/asset.php...4&d=1639620616

There are five wires in the loom namely:
    2 X white
    2 X green
    1 X red

The question is which wire goes to which terminal?

    Thank you

its easy to check the switch.... just check the voltage and bridge the switch wires to test. I did have a melted switch in my car a while back. it should only take 5minutes to check

    Switch test

Thanks but that id not answer my question.

I had a surprise yesterday - bouncing around on the goat track the council calls a road, suddenly the aircon started to work, even though not all of the wires were connected to the switch. This was encouraging, because it means that the aircone itself is working and the problem must be the switch or a loose connection somewhere. By moving the swich to different positions, I was able to get high fan, low fan and off.

I have also just had delivered a replacement switch so if that is the faulty component it can now be eliminated - However, the question remains - which wire colour goes to which terminal? With factorial 5 options, it might take a considerable time to work out.

    Progress - sortof

The new switch has the terminals marked and this will be a serious advantage. However, I still need to work out which wire goes to which terminal - please help if you can:

I presume R will be the red wire But the others are a mystery

    Different wiring colours

Sincere thanks - but the wires in my loom (also a 1991) are different namely 1 X red, 2 X white and 2 X green. Crazy!

There is one other switch that controls the aircon fans - the temperature one on the thermostat housing. Have you tried closing that circuit or changing the switch to see what happens? Standard switch is meant as an overheating protection at 100 degrees I think. I have replaced that unit with a 90 degree one to control my second electric fan (my 91 has AU Falcon fans, fan 1 controlled by TM4 at 89 degrees, fan 2 by that switch, means both fans don't blast off at once and temperature is more stable. Fan 2 also comes on when I have the aircon running, I have removed the front fans as fan 2 by itself is more efficient). Anyway, with that, this simple switch has a lot to do with the AC circuit, if it's faulty the AC fans won't work, no fans no AC. Sorry if you have covered this already, haven't scoured the thread that carefully.
