I just had a look at mine coz I couldn't remember how they worked.

Flap on one side is missing, but I'venever noticed any ill effects.

It looks like the main purpose of them would be to stop bugs getting into the interior via the exterior lower vents and up the inside of C pillar.

My understanding of them is that they are a one way valve.
When the vents are on fresh, air comes in through the vents in front of the windscreen and either through the fan and into the car, or via the heater matrix and into the car.
To prevent the car from pressurising, the vents in the D pillar open and allow the air to flow through.
If you are running the A/C and have the vents on Recirculating, the vents in the D pillar stay shut (due to external air pressure) and prevent warm or dusty air from entering.
Often while driving there will be a positive pressure wave along the side of the vehicle and depending on speed, the location of the highest pressure will vary along the vehicle but could be near the D pillar and air would be forced in if it wasn’t for the one way vents.

I deliberately pressurise the inside for mine out in the sticks to stop dust ingress, from around both parts of the tailgate, by opening the front vent fully and even using the fan on full sometimes with the windows shut.

Aircon wasn't a LR option on these things till around 82 or 84.

Ritters another's were doing aftermarket A/C (and auto trans conversions) prior to that time and supplying the Saudi market, which probably forced LR's hand with these updates.

A guy I spoke with at Ritters some years ago told ne that their conversions were JLR Australia options prior to 82/4.

You're explanation makes sense about flow through ventilation.
