    No drive

    1993 auto.
Car was sitting for a few years.
Managed to get it going drive around the paddocks every now and then. But then it would sit for a few months again.
Now it doesn’t have any forward motion. Sometimes it has reverse.
Oil smells like burnt clutch, and there seems to be a LOT of oil over the max. Mark on the dip stick.
Thoughts on fix? Clutch pack, torque converter, just a simple oil change,….?
    Cheers,
    Stu

Forgive my ignorance of these cars. Is the auto the ZF? I think it would be. If so then it sounds a lot like the A clutch pack.

No forward drive, but reverse, indicates to me the A clutch has failed, with the bad oil a secondary indication. I am no expert, however, but that has been my experience with the later electronic version. I haven't done it myself, but I believe they aren't too difficult to rebuild. Ashcrofts do kits.

if its a slugomatic .... its probably low on fluid. You are checking it with the engine running right? a slugomatic will always show as overful if the car isn't running

Didn't the classic have Chrysler automatic transmission?
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

The early classics did, as an option.
    Newer ones had the zf.

No, it was cold when I checked.

I’ll need to let it run for a while to warm it all up. Although if I can’t drive it, will the trans warm up?

If it is the 93 it could be a few things.
The governor may be sticking. try to move in gear position 1.
2 The splines on the rear output shaft on the transfer case may be worn out and slipping in forward but just grabbing in reverse. If it has done say 220K or so That would be my first guess.
3 the A clutches may be gone but AFAIR it should still move if in 1.

the main thing is the engine is running, so the pump is pumping oil around. It will probably show as empty if you have only checked it without the motor running. Don't try to drive it without enough oil or you will burn the pump/clutches out.
