The way I look at it is the Rangie really worth spending all the money on??
If you plan on keeping it for at least 5 years, spending countless $$$ on a 4.6 or a tdi transplant may be worth the effort. I would just replace the 3.5 oe even a 3.9 from a Disco with 100K or less which can be had cheap if you look around, take a good day to remove the old lump, fit the EFI gear to the replacement and re-fit. Done and on the road once again.
I'm a bit of a purist and anything that's not a LR engine wouldn't be seen under the bonnet of my Rangie.
If economy is really getting you down, LPG is an option although I'm not a big fan of it (probably why my Rangie is a weekend playtoy not a daily driver, I do have a diesel transit for work though).
Good luck with it regardless of which way you go.

a really nice softdash with a td5 in would be nice :D
True, but I only spend money on things that I can take with me to the new vehicle without too many hassles, that way you can upgrade to a batter example without having blown too much coin.
I've had later model 4WD's and whilt it was the best rangie I've owned yet, I wouldn't do it again. I'd rather buy something cheap, that way I don't have too much money tied up in it :)

I think that's my main reasoning for taking on this project.....I can set it up for me the way I like! It needs an engine regardless...... seeing as it needs diff centers and axles I can go 24 spline maxi-drives and arb lockers.......it's going to be a bitza by the end anyway, as much as I appreciate the purist sentiment and views I can set the old girl up to be a capable and comfortable long distance tourer/plaything......most of the bits that have to be replaced are the things most peole modify/throw away in the first place. So I'm looking to do it right and do it once
I have nothing against people who add non-LR bits to there vehicles, it's just something I can't do and won't do byut if it works use it I say :twisted: Although maxi-drives are techically not LR items so this may make me a hypocrit I guess  :oops2: but these were designed for LAND ROVERS ONLY anyway so that may be a saving grace.
As I mentioned, I don't like too much money tied up in my Rangie and 80% of it can be taken across to the next vehicle. ATM the current rig is for keeps because I really can't be ****ed doing it all again to be quite truthful.

I have an '85 Rangie 3.5ltr that is a project just starting. Just wondering is it worth considering a Gen III 5.7ltr transplant?
