    How do you tell if the Morse chain needs replacement.

    Hi people

    I have a RRc with ZF transmission / BW transfer and there are a couple of new noises and symptoms which are concerning.

    It is hard to accurately describe sounds accurately but here goes. On a couple of occasions on the over-run and only at 110 KPH or slightly higher I have started to hear a slight rattling/scraping noise from the rear of the transmission. My diagnosis is a loose or stretched Morse chain looping up and hitting the inside of the transfer case.

    Would this be correct? Can it do that and is that the sort of noise it would make?
    What else could it be?
    How easy is it to fix, or does it go into Graeme Cooper for the job?

    On a second or possibly the same issue.

    A couple of times when turning hard left hand turns recently I have heard a clicking or grinding noise from the front left wheel. It is only for about 1 second while the wheel is on full lock.

    Recently a couple of times when reversing I have noticed a shuddering, either in the front end or centrally/transmission area.

    Any ideas?

    P.S. I work on Series Vehicles and also 24 years ago on my RR 2 door - but have rarely, if ever, done mechanical repairs on this vehicle.

    I havent worked with the chain ones much....

    but a normal tension check with a # of links in a given distance should be all you need to do along with inspecting the rollers for surface wear or excessive flogging on the pins.

    The clunkuing noise might well be a UJ/CV/(name your poison here) in the steering ball joint on the way out.

    Was thinking that I may have a CV on the way out - hoping against hope that its not. Well not at least till after Cooma.

    Can I check the Morse chain without taking the box apart?

    Is changing a CV that bad? I thought it was a pretty simple job. Planning on doing one in the next couple of weeks.

    The morse chain is meant to be silent. However I tracked a whine I had in my softdash to the tooth frequency of the drive spocket (using a microphone and recorder). So they make a whining noise - not a rattling/scrapping noise. Whilst not certain, I'm confident the borgwarner design would not have allowed the chain to rub agaist the casing no matter how much wear.

    Perhaps your VC is seized.
