Was outside cleaning the dust off the air filters on my 85 Rangie 3.5 when it occured to me that theres not much room between the air filters and the tubular air filter container. My thoughts where how much do these 3.5 motors need to breath because its fairly cramped in there and im not sure if enough air gets in, if you know what I mean. If these motors need to breath, what other air filter systems will fit the strombergs??

I've tried different set ups on carby 3.5s and makes little gain. Cam, comp ratio and exhast will help more. Don't bother with so called performance filters unless you want to dust your engine.
My guess is that "he has tried different air filter setups on a 3.5 and it doesn't make any difference."
I have tried Unifilter socks straight onto the carbys and it did seem to make quite a difference to power at high revs. Funny I just found them rotted away the other day and chucked them out about 12 years after taking them off to fit injection..
However I read that deleting the elbows causes a drop in low down torque.
So unifilter socks on the end of the elbows will work but still get hot air. You would then need to run pipes to the front for cold air.

Cheers, I figure that the intake will be sucking up hot air, especially from idle. I will be putting a snorkel on so will get the fresh air. Will see what happens from there.
