Question 3.5 rebuild; valve stem seals?, rings?

Help please guys and girls, whats a flat washer type?
I think the motor is 1977/78. Do I only need inlet valves sealed?
Also the piston rings have slight up and down slack as well as lots of sideways, is that right?
The oil ring is seized (hand tight anyway i haven't had the courage to force it) should I bite it and get a new set?

Sounds as though you have the motor in pieces ... Pistons out & heads off
Flat washer type? ... Dunno ... ask the "parts supplier"

Rings are cheap .... Replace all
Heads ... Replace ALL stem seals & relap all valves / replace springs & get the head "planed" (flat .... as Ali heads like to warp when released from block)

Install with new head bolts (your decision )

Replace the pistons & bearings if the budget allows
Replace the oil pump gears ... (for insurance of good oil pressure)

Why is the motor pulled apart in the first place??

    Type of what? stem seal?

yes. I suggest Teflon seals if the valve guides are AOK

Your pistons are worn out. you need new ones or it will always use lots of oil.
