    which RRC

    Hi guys,

I have been doing some research into RRC's as I am in the market for one.

Being new to the LR brand, I don't know much about the specs for models such as the Vogue and Hiline. Can someone please tell me what the differences are between these and the 'standard RRC's

The drive lines seem to be the same, injected 3.5's etc so I am guessing it has to do with body styles/interior trims or is more involved? when did ACE and airbag rear ends start and on which models

I did originally want a 2 door but they are getting pretty old and I have steered away from them from a maintenance/parts point of view.

    any info appreciated

    RRC

Good choice of vehicle just be aware if you get an 85 mod its right on the changeover from imp - metric and can be fun ordering the correct parts etc.

Most of this is off the top of my head when I was looking for my Rangie a couple of years ago, buuuuuut....

The 3.5 motor gained fuel injection from 1986. Same year the 3speed auto was replaced with the 4speed ZF auto, and the interior was spruced up with the sound system moved to the centre console from the drivers' side of the steering wheel.

Viscous coupled centre diff appeared in 1987.

Vogue replaced the Hiline as the top of the range around 1988/89-ish.
Hiline gained power windows, mirrors, aircon, wood trim, rear head-rests, load cover, alloy wheels and front spoiler over the standard Range Rover.
Somwhere between 1987 and 1989 there was a progressive facelift - vertical to horizontal grille bars with the dash panel, steering wheel, seat and door trims restyled. A/C unit became integrated to the centre HVAC panel as opposed to a separate dash-mounted control.

ACE was only available in from about 1999 on the Discovery II.
Electronic air suspension (EAS) was offered from 1993 onwards in Vogue models.

After considering all that, i got myself an '86 Hiline - fuel injected, 4sp auto, powered interior gizmos, no viscous LSD or EAS. Very happy with it, but it does look somewhat dated alongside the newer (or less old....) Vogue models.

Hope that helps - don't take it for gospel, *blah *blah *disclaimer *disclaimer

Sorry to be pedantic - 1989 actually. These borgwarner transfer cases were supposedly quieter - but mine still has a nice whine up to about 60km/hr. The viscous coupling have been known to seize, and refurbishing them can cost a little more than the standard LT230 (manual) center diff transfer case

Aquarangie and I agree that a 91-92 Vogue is the best keeper. Ward at Graeme Cooper also agrees.

Thye have a 3.9 with 14CUX which is far better than the flapper on a 3.5.

They have good modern wiring with actual fuses, due to the demands of the US market. They have a welded body frame ditto, and concealed hinges and inside tailgate release ditto .

They do not have ABS, air suspension, electric seats, leather, or a sunroof which is rust prone and can cause rust when the drains block.
They have much better aircon than earlier cars.
They are quiet and smooth with the viscous coupling and chain drive BW transfer.( you can always change to an LT230 if it dies although it is very backward step from a driving pleasure perspective)
The price difference is so little nowadays that it is crazy to look at the old stuff. Hell a 92 is now 16!!!! and you can get a sub160KKm car for around 6-8 K.
You can get a Vogue SE with all the fruit and air suspension, and take off the air , but you have to watch the sunroof, and whether the seats work although its often just dirty switches.
    Regards Philip A
