Actually the reason I am wanting an alternative air filter arrangement is to get the original factory air box (round) away from the front corner of the engine bay so that I have the room to install a second battery - So if anyones got advise on this it would be appreciated.
All you have to do is cut off the intake snout . If the battery is very high like my 95AH AGM, maybe think about a snorkel. AFAIR its not necessary to move the filter back.

I cut mine off at the back of the filter can so I still had the metal attachment to the MAF and the support.
I agree that in dusty conditions they may not be the best, but there is a wrap available for them to go over the top if you run in dusty conditions regularly.

I did this for exactly the same reason, but you will also have to fab a mount up to move the PS reservoir also. Will take a pic tomorrow and post it up for you.

    Cheers

    Andrew.

Pics of how mounted. The std aircleaner is too long and yes you do need remove the main can if you want to get a dual battery in. The downward angle of the std filter puts it right in the place of the battery mount area with the intake horn almost against the radiator support frame.
I still want to make a cold air box at least.

As mounted. Bent filter is from hitting the roo a few years back.

Closeup of MAF intake pipe. The airbox was about flush with the back of the filter.

    Battery and P/S reservoir positions.

my 3.5l twin carb, I mounted twin K&N pod filters and noticed a differnce in acceleration, it was much smoother and constant when putting the foot down. Also changed all the belts in the engine which made it a bit quieter so maybe that helped too. I don't drive in dusty conditions much, mostly towing the boat and the odd bush bashing trip to find new fishing holes.

Hey Mate - Matt here from perth. Its been a while since this post of yours so I hope you're still around. My question would be the same regardless, but as a point of interest - I was interested to read your summary of the CSK RRC in Australia. A photo of mine is attached. You can just make out the faded decal on the tailgate. Easier to make out is the bogged Lancelin, WA police divvy van 50 yards onto the beach with 40psi. Even my dogs had a giggle p*ssing on one of the tyres before they could deflate it. The chap I purchased the CSK from 7 years ago said it belonged to the Perth dealer new and was stored for around 10 years. Other RR officials confirmed the 76000km on the clock when I bought it and it now has 98000.

Anyway - my question is exactly the same as yours - I want to clear some space for second battery under the bonnet - move the airbox possibly incorprorating a snorkel. If I go with second battery in the rear, I would still like to see how she goes with more air than the can would seem to provide.

Have the 8 years since your post been sufficient for you to complete yours? I would live to see any photos and hear any ideas.

Hope you haven't gone Toyota or anything silly and you're still knocking about in this forum.

    Cheers
    Matt

    Hey Matt,

There are a bunch of threads on here regarding RRC dual battery setups in the engine bay as well as the relayed airbox / snorkel stuff. Whilst the snorkel bit may not interest you, the underbonnet modifications which enable the use of the snorkel also have been discussed in several threads. Below are a couple which may help.
