Thats very interesting! Another aside is that both my brothers have BMW 320's with the 6 cylinder motors.
Both of them are enthusiastic drivers I would say but are very respectful of machinery just the same. One of these cars uses oil consistently, - 1 litre per 5000 km - one uses nothing! Both have 80,000 odd kms on them and both are manual, manufactured in the same year. BMW also claim this is within 'normal limits' Nice to see that the germans also have a wide degree of variability in what they consider 'normal

My 93 Disco which was gas and petrol used no oil at all between changes. It was a 3.5 V8 with 260,00 km on the clock. It sometimes worried me because ive been told they are suppose to leak from the factory.

It must have used some. All engines do. Valve stem lubrication and ring lubrication are total loss.

Fluffy would be lucky to use 500ml between services (every 5000), I personally think it would be a lot less but never really checked, I just know she doesnt use much at all.

On the otherhand Snowball was goin through 500ml a month, but it did have a few oil leaks, where as Fluffy only has an oil seep (nothing dripping yet).

Normal oil consumption in a Landrover depends on how big the puddle of oil underneath it is, when you park it. At least it seems that way.

Our 3.9 does not use that much oil, and the ones we previously had, 3 of them were not too bad. After a run, with hot engine, park where their is no oil on the ground, and see if you have a bit on the ground when you are about to leave a few hours later.

Thanks for the tip on the rocker cover - all bolts were loose. in fact they all did up between 3/4 and 1 full turn.
I have a large concrete area at my place so the drips are easy to spot - a few here and there - but as said - oil goes a long way.

I notice 5000 km for oil changes was mentioned - whats the benefit?
I thought a good quality oil and filter would be ok for 10,000 on LPG - Terry

More frequent changes with standard oil is better then less frequent with good quality oil.

In saying that I use Castrol Magnatec (10W-40), which isnt a bad oil IMHO.

I service and check all my vehicles at 5000k intervals.

Ever had an oil analysis done? I would guess that the oil you are dropping out is part fuel (goes past the rings, particularly on cold start). There is no way that your engine is using no oil at all. It just can't happen.
