    FUSE IDENTIFICATION

    Hi All
Seems my fuel pump has died, wouldnt start trying to leave work tonight and was a bit dodgy on the start the last few days.
Pulled off the fuel return from the regulator, turned on ignition and no fuel!

While under my front seat trying to work out which relay was the fuel pump relay, I noticed that there is a red 10A and a yellow 20A fuse on a loom alongside the EAS disable switch. The yellow 20A was blown and as I had a spare, changed it but didn't help my cause.

Have searched my Rave Cd and factory manuals but can't find any reference to these fuses.

    Anyone have any ideas???

Meantime I still have a dead pump or maybe just a dud relay.

Hi Andrew .... I know one of those relays under the drivers seat is for the fuel pump /// Trouble is ... I don't know off hand which one

Try unplugging each one and see what goes dead

BUT .... For a Idea of what may have gone wrong ... under the PASSENGER seat is the black cut out switch box ... Have you knocked it and set it off?

Have a look at it & pull the knob up & push it down ... as this also knocks out the fuel pump in the event of a accident

    Mike

    Hi Mike
The "roll over" relay was the first thing I did think of!

I think I may have answered my question on the fuse. Was just re reading thru the electrical section right at the back of my factory books and found a reference relating to the Auxiliary fuse box under the LHF seat.

    Underneath is
"MISCELLANEOUS FUSES UNDER FRONY RIGHT SEAT"
One 10A Red - Fuel Pump (Petrol only)
    One 20A Yellow - EFI

It was the yellow EFI fuse that was blown....
Even after I plugged a new one in, still no fuel pump and the fuel pump fuse wasnt blown.....
Maybe theres a reason I found the listing for the ECU's in the Lucas AM catalogue.....

Am going to attempt to fix at work tomorrow and take my meter down and probe some terminals. I need a new pump anyway as my fuel gauge shuts off at about 2/3 full and I drive on the trip meter.

Maybe she got the ****s with me and is chucking a car tantie due to Simone and myself discussing the possibility of replacing her with something newer for the road and something older for the bush!

Yes ... you have indeed answered your Q .... Multi meter job on the fuse / power lines

and you have to make it up to "her" this weekend and apologise for such foolish thoughts ... Nothing replaces a RRC .... They are a classic in their own right

    Problem solvered!!

OK, replaced the fuel pump, plugged it in, started it up and hey presto its all go!! However.........

Started it up to go home and had to stop on the way home. Turned it off with every confidence it was fine. Things were not as they seemed.
Out of the car for no more than 5 minutes, hopped back in and lots of crank but no bang.

    "WTF!!!!! #^#@*& # @@&*@#^ (*(@* @^! 0#(* @#&U@*() @#^)@ !!!!!!!!!!"

To cut a long story short, it turned out to be the fuel pump relay, BUT, the relay itself caused the pump to burn out when it arced out, subsequently blowing the 20A yellow fuse!!
Relay was running extremely hot, took off the metal cover and contacts were covered in powdery crap and stuck together, but not making contact!
Luckily I had a fishhook in the car, a quick swap of the EFI main relay to the fuel pump plug and it got me home.... and is still working now until I get the right relay.
Tried a few different ones I had in my shed, but as these have a diode on pin 86, resistor and diode looped protection coils didnt work.

so basically a $15 item cost me $240 for a new pump, a lot of cursing!!!

Now I am on a "relay service" program, stripping and cleaning every possible main relay that relates to essential operations......

Think theres something in that for all of us.......

As they say, all things come in three's........

Turns out it was a burnt wire into the inertia switch plug, yes, the INERTIA switch that caused all the problems!!!

Have a mate who is a auto sparkie who just happened to be five minutes away when it died on me in the carpark at Ballajura shops on Saturday morning!! Funny thing is he was just on his way over to my place to give Simone a new remote for her car alarm.
As he had all his gear with him, did a quick test on EFi etc etc etc and then put a jumper wire from fuel relay to the fuel pump and low and behold it started. Turned it off, took the jumper wire off and it wouldnt budge. Reconnect and hey presto!!!
So, back to my place with all the gear in the back spread all over tha car and proceeded to trace the wiring from the pump back to the pump relay and there it was, one badly arced out wire thanks to the previous owner doing some shoddy work with connectors and not crimping them properly causing a few loose strands to come adrift and rub on the floor!!!!
Problem now is that I have a fuse that is blowing for ciggie lighter and as my manual control for thermo fans is connected to the same circiut, everytime I switch them on connected or not, fuse goes POP!! This happened when trying to get it going prior to doing any testing, so i can assume that something has got hot from arcing and pinged another wire somewhere.
This now forces me to rewire all my accessories as the LH spotlight now goes half strength while the RH is good, but the horn now comes on. Good for when some tosser pulls out in front of you I spose as one action gives two results!!!!

AHHHHH the joys of LucasRover electrics!!! #^@@) _@&@_&( _** _!
