    Cylinder head gasket replacement

Hi, I'm attempting to replace the head gaskets on my 1988 3.5 EFI rangie.
I've hit problems removing the Ram housing; the bolts seem to be corroded into the the inlet manifold...So far one has snapped off, two are out and three will snap if I push them any harder. Anyone have any suggestions? Steel bolts into Aluminium seems to be the problem; threads on the ones i got out are thick with white powder....will I have the same problem with the inlet and outlet manifold bolts?? And worse still the heads to block bolts??
Any advise / recommendations gratefully received.... So far as I know the motor has never been touched from new and is now at 330,000Kms.
    Cheers
    Brian

I do not think you will have the same problem with the inlet manifold bolts as they are big diameter. Just make sure you have a good as new 12 point socket and a long breaker bar.

Exhaust manifold could be fun , but again they are big diameter.

Head bolts should have had sealant from new, but I would be amazed if it has not had a few head gaskets. Just make sure you have very good quality 12 point sockets and be careful you have them completely on the bolt top.

You may grow some new muscles.

    Thanks Philip, thats reassuring.
I bought the car in 1993 and it definately has not had any work done on the engine in that time other than regular servicing so I can't complain I guess. It's the head bolts that concern me the most since the block stays in the car. Extracting broken bolts fitting helicoils etc would be difficult. Fingers crossed I guess.

spray bolts liberally with Loctite "Freeze and Release" ...it causes microcracking in the corrosion /oxide deposits and then applies lubricant as you proceed to undo the bolts...saves broken bolts/stripped threads etc ...beats using the oxy torch!!
    good luck

Thanks Hoges, that sounds useful. I haven't heard of Loctite "Freeze and Release" will try Repco tomorrow for some.
I haven't got an oxy torch in any case Although I did wonder about trying heat....

If you're doing the head gaskets, you don't need to split the ram housing from the inlet manifold - you can unbolt the inlet manifold and ram as one unit? Would save you more bother?

Mind you, started now, so might as well finish....that loctite tip sounds good, would give that a go.

    Hope it all goes well,

    Fish.

I think the top has to come off to access some of the manifold bolts. I did the intake gasket on my "new" 3.9 and it only took 45 minutes to remove the manifold.
