Looking on ebay and keep seeing these performance mod chips for Range Rovers , are they any good ? do they work ? Seems cheap for the quoted gains .
I am assuming you are talkign about the RPi Engineering chips.
If so, they are orsum. Only thing is you need to pull out your ecu and open it up to replace the eprom.
They need details of which eprom is your current so they can supply you with the correct chip and tune.
EDIT: If i didnt already have my Haltech i would be running a RPi chip
I rule!!!
2.4" of Pure FURY!!!
The Haltech intercepter may be more tunable.

i heard they can be better but they can stuff things up and if the insurance company find out or if you have any warranty on the vehicle then you you lose it- just what i heard
They work best on older systems like the 14CUX because the ECU is dumb and does not self tune. ( except if you add o2 sensors). In addition the tune that comes to Australia is "rest of world" which allows for fuel down to 87 or so octane. Finally 14CUX has no control of ignition timing at all.
If you put in a bigger capacity (eg 4.6 vs 3.9) they are superior to a standard chip as the 14CUX has programmed a maximum injector duration of 70% or so and the RPI ECU changes this to a higher duty cycle) . No aftermarket piggybacks can change this. AFAIR the standard ECU also adds no more fuel after about 5K revs so the engine is "governed" .
The RPI chip also changes idle speed, cold start settings, and deletes the speed limiter at 180Kmh.
HOWEVER the major gains from a piggyback are from taking control of the timing curve and adding LOTS of advance at light throttle low revs, and if necessary at higher revs.
IMHO the timing changes are the secret to the greater power and economy that are gained with a piggyback.
SO for standard capacity a piggyback is best.
For bigger capacity an RPI chip will help but gains will be limited without a piggyback as well.

I think Wells might be thinking of this product
20 bhp mod chip for RANGE ROVER Freelander Land Rover - eBay Mod Chips, Performance Parts, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 29-Apr-09 21:02:04 AEST)
I believe that it is a resistor pack added to the hot wire of the MAF
Have no idea of it's true function & value

I believe they cause the engine to run richer.
