    which steering box?

    Hi guys, my 76 three bolt box is caput so time for the 4 bolt conversion me thinks. Could you tell me which vehicles the suitable 4 bolt steering box is used on (models years)? I heard the conversion kit is about $60 and I imagine a second hand box with a rebuild will still be less than the $1400 for a newy. Which boxes had needle bearings instead?

    where abouts are you?

    I believe Disco 1 steering boxes are a bolt in proposition.

    Im in Geelong. Thats good to know about disco boxes. Are they readily available used?

    Find out who's wrecking one ... Grab everything
    Steering shaft ... to ... steering box ... to ... Pitman arm ... to .... Tracking rod ...


    you may have to cut 10mm off each side of track rod, so the ball joint's can be wound in to fit up to the "leading steer wheel"

    Grab the steering shaft as the "rubber cushion flex joint" will be broken

    I installed a 94 Disco box setup in my 90RRC

    later range rovers also used the four bolt . you will need to change the oil pipes to the box as the connections are different

    4 Bolt steering boxs have more turns lock to lock than the older 3 bolt ones.

    I actually changed mine from a 4 bolt to a 3 bolt. Enzed will be able to do the plumbing changes for you

    Thanks for the help folks. Ended up with a 4 bolt through Hunter Cuthill. Talk about both ends of the stick! Had flack about "a seventy SIX!!! - what you want to drive an old clunker like that etc etc (ad infinitum)" to "gotta love them old girls, had lots of fun test driving this one" from his more astute business partner. Some people just dont get classic cars.

    The box is great, no more pools on the shed floor. Has made apparent I need to replace my trailing arm bushes though...oh well. Always something next.

    This is certainly a timely topic.
    My 300,000km '87 EFI steering box has started leaking like a sieve again, rustproofing the underside of the car.
    It was replaced 3 years ago at 255,000km with a rebuilt/modified box with improved seals, so I'm a bit disappointed although it was made clear to me that the success rate was about 90%.
    The original box was replaced at 165,000km with a standard reco box.

    What are my options please? I didn't realize that the boxes changed later on.

    I'm also very fond of the early models. Had a '76 with unassisted steering for many years. To my eyes they are still the quintessential Range Rover, as is the short wheelbase Series 2 Landy. (They also have to be Sahara Dust and dark green respectively)
