5 speed gearbox to 4 speed

    I have an '85 Rangie with a buggered LT77 5 speed.

I have a good 4 speed and transfer case. Will it fit? Are the any problems with it bolting in?
I am aware the the controls are in diferent positions and that I will need to cut some holes in the gearbox cover for the levers.

And you'll get a better box too

You'll lose the bigger park brake drum etc, but in a RRC the smaller one will be adequate.

I have read that the transfer case used with the 4 speed is a weak unit and the transfer behind the 5 speed is stronger.
As I have both transfer cases I was wondering which transfer to use.
Will the 5 speed transfer be able to be fitted? I am also thinking of the control levers, they are different between models and I don't think that I will be able to make it work easily.

You cannot change over transfer cases as the 4 speed LT95 has the transfer integrated onto the gearbox (1 piece casing). There is nothing wrong with the LT95 transfer case behind a V8, only behind an Isuzu do you have any problems and that is only the intermediate shaft which can be rectified by fitting a tapered roller intermediate shaft assembly (easy to fit). This gearbox is a much better one than the LT77. The earlier rangies had this box so I would imagine that there would't be much difference in the transmission tunnel - probably just the rubber boot. If you got this assembly from the earlier model it should bolt in. Only other thing is the centre diff lock which is vacuum operated in the LT95 - you would have to get a vacuum switch and run a vacuum line from your motor...................Brian

    Thank-you again for your help.
The engine and gearbox has been removed from the body but I still have the body.
Unfortunately the tunnel on the 4 speed body is not useable. Though the switch and all of the control levers are still there ready for use.

The LT95 will be OK if it came out of another RR but if it came out of a Stage 1 V8 it may end up being a little low geared. Higher transfer case gears are available but they do attract a premium. You can also get an O/D to go on the end of the LT95.

    Removal of gearbox

I am going to remove the gearbox tomorrow.
Do I need to remove the enging and gearbox together, or can I drop the gearbox on it's own?

be aware the cluch plate splines are different so you will need a new clutch plate. I tried to swap a almost new clutch from a two door onto later 4 door and found iout the hard way.
