Manual or auto depends on your preference and what auto is fitted (changed with year model).
33 x 10.5 muddies will fit.
hi
i was going to buy a rrc a while a go for a daily and decided not to wanted something newer and a ute so brought a bf xr8 ute nice little toy that decimate's traffic if a little heavy on rear tyre's
anyways had a week off and thought bugger it and borrowed the parents 93 rrc and went done some touring around halls gap and horsham then took it back as they needed it.
which sucked as everywhere i went i was like oh it would be good to head up there but cant.
i had a ball in it and so did the g/f even when i got it boged driving around greenlake.
i see 3 options of being affordable on beer budget rrc,D1, suzi sierra the suzi i think would be to small as i wouldent mind doing the odd overnight stay here and there and i have a few spare rrc to rade for spare's
now what would be better a manual or auto? as i can still get the rangie i was looking at last time if i want but its auto with the v/c transfer case which iam not a fan of but have a earlyer transfercase in one of the spare's so can swap it over.
also with out lifting it or cutting the body up what would be the biggest tyre's you can fit? iam not woried if chesse cutter's or not so long as they work and last and still work when half worn, so mabey dunlop super grippers in 7.5r16 or simerlar type like those olympic one's the army use?
if anyone know's of a rrc with reg but needs work but drivable pref with reg let me know
thanks mark

33s will be very tight without a lift and/or a bit of trimming.
I'm running 7.50R16s (approx 31.5") & they rub various parts of my body on full articulation.
33s might be OK on a 2 door though as there's more clearance at the rear but I think the front might need trimming still.

from what ive seen which is limited the auto's are better at climbing hills.
manuals better in the boggey stuff and down hill.
is that a fair assement?
it would be 4 speed auto if i got auto.
whats a good 7.5r16 tyre?
if it was me looking for a budget rrc, 85-89 efi, 4sp zf auto with lt230 xfer case, i just bought an 85 with as above for $900, needed rust repairs in the drivers floor otherwise it drove great and was a good vehicle. I ended up striping it cause that was my intenerion when i bought it, thinking back it was too good to wreck but oh well. I have 32"s on my 94, i have a 2" lift and i trimmed the front gaurds later on, going back to 31"s on thursday, my new wrangler mtr kevlar's arive tommorow arvo.
31x10.5 on the right offset rims (close to std) is a good size tyre for these imho, may need a little gaurd trimming without a lift though.
In my experience, autos are better for going nice and slow over the rocky stuff.
I'm running Michelin XPCs at the moment but going back to Dunlop Road Grippers soon for off road work. Unfortunately, Road Grippers aren't a tubeless tyre (technically).

XPC's are my fav but no longer available.
A simple 2 inch lift is cheap and will give better clearance.
Have a look in the market section here, a few good ones there.
Look for something that has a few extras already, fitting them costs a bomb and you will never get your money back.
I would go a 86-88 model with auto and Lt 230 also.
Perhaps even gas to make running a little more affordable as the ride in them is so good, you will probably wanna sell the XR8 and go the Rangie for every day stuff.
Put a 4.6 in it and you will have even more fun.
Oh the joys.
A good Disco 96-99 tdi is also affordable and usually very reliable and economical.
My 2c worth.
