Thread: RRC Fuel Tank Replacement

The mounts are different but it's easy enough to get around that.

I have a late D1 long range tank in my '87 RR. The rear mount on the car just needed to be redrilled & I folded up a new front mount bracket & welded it in place of the original.

I can take piccies tonight if that's any help.


The '89 was still 3.5 so it would have the steel tank.

From memory my 89 had a steel tank.
My gas fitter took it out and left it outside to rust, I later had a friend that was looking for one.

I try and call a couple of landrover gas fitters, they usually are happy just to get rid of them asap.

While you are at it, check the fuel pump and perhaps cut an access hole in the back floor to gain access to the to of tank to get to sender and pump.
I am not sure, but some have a hole there and some don't.
Anyhow, mine was steel and I do now seem to remember that the installer also said that some do have plastic, not sure if its like a lucky dip or if there is a date change over.

My 89 has a steel tank. I cant see why you cant use a latter tank and adapted mounts as the chassis are very similar.

I was thinking of putting the plastic disco tank I have in but it has a long filler with fume recovery as part of it.

Remember this is for a Range Rover that has been chopped to a Ute (see pic) so on the rear there is a flat tray and the chassis rails to play with.

From memory the old steel rangie tanks has a lower filler than the disco plastic tank I have and so will be a much easier fit under the tray (in terms of the filler etc).

Hence while I have a Disco tank on the floor easier to put a Rangie tank in I thought - at least until I get a new cell made and engineered for under the tray.

Thanks Philip - so would an early 3.5 efi disco have a steel tank?
I am just trying to find out what models to chase the wreckers for parts from. Easiest fit is what I am after to get back on the road while contemplating a fuel cell and rear chassis cut.
