    88 RRC Gearbox Oil

    Hello,

I have an 88 Manual 5spd Classic, which is very hard to get into reverse and 1st when hot, no doubt it may be something much more sinister that has to get fixed, but I want to start with a good oil,as who knows what's in it now.. so what's the good stuff??.

And should I put the same stuff in the transfer box, or something diffeerent?

    Cheers for any help,

    Ray

I'm not sure which oil would be best but I think you might have a clutch issue developing from those symptoms .

Nope, sorry...not the reply i need...how about something like " you just need to grease the flange on the left hand nipple and all will come good"

sounds so much better than a clutch issue...!

From memory, ATF was used in those gearboxes & regular 80w/90 gear oil in the transfer case.

    Is that better?

    Into what tranny?

The LR manual says ATF (DIII?), and I used that until I blew up the LT77 in my 88 car.

It depends a bit on what you use the car for. Has it got a trans cooler? If it's LT77, I had success with MTF94 - LT77S as well.

But the best add-on was a trans oil cooler, and I used the bar type from an auto with fabricated plumbing.

I still busted gearboxes until I fitted a late model R380.

Search the forum for associated threads - there has been plenty of discussion on the topics you have raised.

I use Castrol Syntrans in mine. I think the box has had a rebuild at some stage in its life. The shift quality is pretty good and it doesn't make bad noises.

I looked at the clutch when I fitted the 3.9, all I did was clean the flywheel and pressure plate with sandpaper before bolting it all back in.

Same here in my dunga, is a good unit but now sitting on the floor in the shed as I converted the dunga to an auto (painful job, NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!).

In all honesty I spent years crapping on them but after owning one I wouldn't hesitate having one again and they can take a bit of punishment. Pity the reverse was put in a **** spot, slipped into reverse a few times off-road accidentally with a few chrunching noises
