    TDi into '87 rangie

i am looking at putting a TDi into a '87 rangie auto. going by the threads here it is a straight swap. one thing i am wondering is how do you make the rev counter work from the V8 to the diesel?
any other hints on the conversion apreciated

The tacho drives off the alternator in both cases. If the pulley sizes are the same, it should work correctly.

I would imagine that the engine mounts require replacement (you would have weld brackets appropriate for the 300tdi to the chassis)

Also.... you would have to use the auto box that comes with the 300tdi, as the existing V8 auto gearbox is not setup for the 300tdi power curve

So... the gearbox mounts may also require refitting... no doubt others who have actually done the conversion will add some detail to this

the 300tdi had two pulley sizes during its life, so it will depend on the build date which alternator comes with the engine

It is straightforward - not exactly a straight swap

EDIT: Most of the pics aren't coming up - but the thread should still prove illuminating.

Use the search function 'diary tdi conversion' and the whole sequence of threads should come up.( That or search threads started by the author).

I've seen it up close and it's a damm fine vehicle.

Thanks Laurie. I suspect it depends upon the ratio of the crank pulley to the alternator pulley in both cases.

Would LR have engineered them to have the alternators spin at the same rpm at cruise speeds?

Hi Ron, AFAIK on the 300tdi, the crank pulley is the same throughout...

My guess is that the rev counter post-97 was calibrated differently

Experts knowledge would be appreciated if they care to add/differ

Unless you are swapping alternators from engine to engine the pulley size doesnt come into the equation, it only matters if the tach signal is the same output as what the rangie tacho will read.

    but .... I don't think you can swap what he's got (V8 alternator) with a 300tdi alternator

could it be easyer to buy a roled tdi disco it would be easyer to do the body swap and then also use the tdi dash (no welding needed)
