    thanks everyone for the input
more explenation on rangie needed i think

the rangie has no motor and the auto is just hanging there! i was at first considering replacing it with a gas V8 but after talking to a gas fitter i might not get enough gas on board? also i think it might be cheaper overall to fit the diesel and box
if i fit the TDi, i will do the manual conversion as well. i will be trying to get one with its ancillieries attached so i can use the alternator/tacho ( thanks for that info everyone)
just looking for info on any pitfalls/dramas BEFORE i go there

The alternator pulley on the post 1996 (TA) Tdi is closer to the size of the small RRC V8 pulley. Connecting the slate and grey wire to the W terminal of the Tdi alt will give you a pretty accurate tachometer.

The comment on pulley sizes refers to MA (1994 to 1995) 300Tdi which have larger diameter alternator pulleys, and the later (TA up to WA) which have smaller diameter ones.
