A bit late now but an auto electrician will rebuild your starter for about $200.
Regards Philip A
G'day guys,
The starter in my 93 RRC started to play funny buggers on occasion. As the Rangie is my work vehicle 3 misfires was enough for me to replace it.
The starter was the original (dated 05/92) and has done 256000kms (and god only knows how many starts!
I did the usual ring around and the best price i could get on a lucas replacement was $380, spoke to ashdown ingrams here in perth and they cross referenced the part # to a bosch # which was out of stock but this crossed to a mitsubishi electric (also no stock) but this number carried over to an OEX brand (pn MXS307) This came in at $242 in gst.
I have used many many OEX starter on heavy earthmoving gear and never had a problem with the brand so i was happy to bolt one on the Rangie.
Long story short the car went front a cranking rpm of aprox 90 and cranking volts of 9.5 (.5 volts higher than the minimum start threshold for the wolf ecu) to a crank speed of 180rpm and 11.5 volts at crank.Obviously Im pretty happy with this. The car now fires up with just a touch of the key and the first few seconds of idle from cold as now smooth as silk. (i put this down to the ecu getting at least 11volts at cranking speed compared to 9.5)
cheers
Luke

I doubt the bill for this one would be $200 Phillip, the field magnets where damaged, the comm looked like the himilaya's in profile and the planetary gears where worn to the point of being razor sharp.
I did try to source a solenoid and brush pack, only place here in Perth that could match the numbers couldn't get them in stock till late next week and was talking around $150 for the parts so i couldn't see they economy in it.
cheers

It cost me $250 to just get the drive gear/clutch pack replaced on mine - that included the parts.

Well I had mine dismantled , cleaned and reassembled for $100 at 170KK and the guy quoted $200 for rebuild as long as only brushes/ bearings etc required, so yes in your case a new one was the go.
But often when they stop it's just brushes.

Luke,
May i know which shop in Perth did you purchase the OEX starter motor from?
I suspect my starter motor for my 3.5 D1 is playing up when i started her this morning and when she finally got fired up i could heard something like bits of fragments flying around....something like a continuous clanking noise around the starter motor area.
I immediately switched off the engine and after a couple of restarts the sound disappeared.
Hopefully she'll start alright tomorrow.
Kind regards,
Jonno
I have had two new starters from Ashdown Ingrams in my 87 in the last twelve months. Both of them I had to replace as the cones literally snapped off. They use a cast composite alloy and for whatever reason are not up to the task of over 6 months worth of starting. Both were replaced under warranty and admittedly they started the engine suberbly when first installed. Now have an original 2nd hand in and decided to give the Ashdowns starter a miss. Its turnover is slower when cranking than the Ashdowns but hopefully will last a hell of a lot longer. First starter had done over 400,000 k.
