Gave up on the diffs. couldn't get either plug out. seems like they have been put in there with some kind of locktite/glue on the thread.
leaving that one for the mechanic.

Final note of interest, I only got 5.5 litres of oil out of the engine. I checked the dipstick before and it was inbetween the 2 marks. I broke my filter wrench trying to get the filter off so there would have been a bit left in there. Still, I put 7 litres in and it's now 1 cm above the high mark.

Is this an indication of a fair amount of sludge in there?

I would drive it and change the gb oil again in 1000km see how it looks
If it's not doing anything strange why fix it? Recon that box will be about $3500
7l refill oil is correct. Filter takes about another 500ml
The actual amount of oil seems to vary engine to engine
Just go by the dipstick not the volume is the advise I had

G'Day Chris, sorry for the lag in reply, been pretty busy this last week.
THought I would reply here rather than a pm to have my answers available for those who follow later.
First thing is gaskets. Like for the transmission/transfer case /pto and differential drain plugs (do the fill ports have gaskets? If so I'll need them to) do you know what size/type they are?
    transmission:
    Main/ transfer washer- Joint R571837
Bottom cover- FRC 7104 * Caution* Original was Asbestos/ rubber mix

Drain plug washer: FRC 4810 (Sorry, don't have the actual size at hand)

    Centre Diff;

Fill plug washer: Flat fibre washer 36mm OD-25mm ID, FRC 4835

    Oil filter washer: FRC 4810
Drain plug washer * Caution* Original was Asbestos/ copper mix: Gasket, Asbestos and Copper, 19mm ID, 12.7mm ID- FRC 4808

transfer case: Gasket, Transfer cover, fibre (top, rectangular) FRC 3508

PTO: PTO gasket, oil proof paper(same F&R) AYG 3353
Bottom cover- FRC 7104 * Caution* Original was Asbestos/ rubber mix
IRT Grease and oils- I only recommend what the designers recommend. I know that some people have had good results with technical oils in the gearbox but -caveat emptor.

What grease to use on the grease nipples. The manual says XG291, but I can find a civilian equivalent.
XG 291 is Rocol Aerospec 300. Go here, download the data sheet and find a suitable substitute. https://www.rocol.com/datasheets

Diff oil, I know the front Diff is 85w90 EP Gear oil.
I've seen some mention of the rear Salisbury diff needing 80/140 EP gear oil? (even though the book says 85/90)
85/ 90 front and rear. Reasoning as per gearbox oil.

If you could help me with those things I would be so grateful!

IRT the gearbox wear. I highly recommend chatting with Brian 'Bearman' here. He is the LT95 &A Guru. The good/ sad truth is that even if you have to rebuild the gearbox, you have payed less than average price for your truck. At least you will KNOW that your box is good for another 200K+.

    I hope that this helps.
    Cheers,
    Cheers, BDave.

    Thanks BFD! your're a champion.

I managed to get by with taking off the existing gaskets, driving down to Repco and finding replacements that way.

Have you noticed that the replacement fuel filter from Isuzu seems a little smaller than the one the army had on it? It fits and doesn't leak, and the part number on the box matches, but it is smaller. and it leaves a small gap between the top of the filter and the bottom of the bracket.

I'll look into that grease. i picked up some Isuzu MP2 grease that seemed likely. only got to grease the front prop shaft before I got the damned nipple stuck on the PTO u-joint. cannot for the life of me get that off, so I've left it for the mechanic to remove and I'll talk to him about what to use.

I looked at that site, not sure how it's going to help me find a substitute?
unless there is somewhere I am not looking.

took it for a drive after changing all the oils, filters etc. seems fine.
bit of a 'snick' when you change into 2nd from first, but it all works and no grinding/crunching etc.

off to the mechanic tomorrow for a more thorough lookover, we'll see what he has to say about it.

G'Day Chris. Did you download the specs sheet?
If you are after a straight substitute you can compare them with another manufacturers.
I consider it a bit of overkill in normal application.
Another high quality grease will do. It is not as critical as the gearbox oil.
    Glad to help.
    Cheers, BDave.

I hope you warned them to put their hazmat suits on first before they looked at your gaskets.

all good. none of the drain/filler plug gaskets were original. you'd want to hope not after 30 years!

now If I start getting other stuff done, you bet I will tell them.
Off to the mechanic now, then just have to wait for 'that' phone call

    <edit>
Yesssssss! Got her back, and she is perfect! a few oozes here and there, but nothing major, and
nothing that needed to be done.
She now has fresh fluids front to back, and clean bill of health and an impending trip down the
coast to get some lock cylinders for the doors and ignition.
