Post Perentie Transfer Brake Oil Leak

    Hi folks,

After a recent 1000+km trip I've noticed oil leaking from where the rear prop shaft connects to the transmission brake (pic attached). I hadn't noticed any leaking prior to the extended travel, but I can see a few drops sitting at the bottom of the brake, and the underside of the chassis has copped a bit of a spay which concerns me.

I'm aware that this could be due to a bad seal and am hoping it's just that, but was wondering if anyone else has seen this problem before, and what the common causes and fixes can be.

Bit of a newbie here so I hope I've posted in the right place

    Hi
Looks like grease from the uni joint to me. I think if it was the rear seal from the transfer case the oil would be dripping from the front of the drum. Check the oil level in the transfer case. If it's ok happy days.

Yep looks like rear seal in transfer case - not uncommon on all Land Rovers - but did you over grease the uni joint?? could be that as ajge says

    simple job but takes time

    drop oil out of case
    remove rear prop shaft
    remove brake drum
    remove old seal
    put new one on
reverse above and put it all back together

there will be a full blown mechanic that may give you more detail but that's basically it

    cheers

I haven't applied any grease to the uni joint as of yet but it got a full belly of HPR recently, so I will indeed check the levels as suggested by ajge, and then work from there.

I'll post back once I know what the specific issue and fix is for anyone else who may encounter it.

thats not the output flange seal its the flange to shaft nut.

    easy fix.
Engage CDL 1st gear low range
    apply the park brake
    drop the Tcase oil
    while thats happenign
remove the prop shaft starting at the diff end.
remove the nut in the middle of the shaft output flange
    pull the washer out.
if its got the felt seal in there rip that out too.

    spray down with brake clean
fill the void of the shaft/flange with blue ATV
clean the back of the washer
put the washer back on and wind the nut on finger tight
    release the park brake
torque up the nut (100nm from memory I'll look it up or someone else can later)
wait about 2 hours (for the sealant to skin and set)
fill the Tcase with cheap engine oil
clean the handbrake and the rest of the underside of the vehicle
    replace the propshaft
take it for a short drive (15-25km max) at low load
if you have no oil present then the repair was sucessful. drain the engine oil and refil with the normal oil you are using. (this also flushes the Tcase)

If you want to check the output seal remove the handbrake drum prior to undoing the shaft nut.

there is a catch tray inside the assembly that is intended to deal with output seal weaps so if the assembly is correct if you look up the forwards edge of the backing plate you will see a small square cut out the oil will appear hear first. a small trace is acceptable however the usual cause of contamination on the drum is this small hole gets blocked.

    Solved!

Thanks to all who provided suggestions and advice, very much appreciated.

Ended up going through the process as described by blknight (and others), however I didn't do a test fill with the cheap oil as I got to work prior to seeing that post, good protip though. Replaced the rear output seal (part# ftc4939) and been on another 250k trip with no leaks or seeping
