What is this Plate? Perentie "Auctions"?? Help in choosing!

Looking into buying one of the Land rovers that are currently for sale in the NSW Minto Auction.

    Just a couple of questions

I was hoping someone could explain and tell me more about this (see attachment) this MOD plate?

What does it mean what should I be looking out for so on.
When I look at the military service books, what should I be looking for?

All these auction landrovers look the same to me, apart from the general basic inspections. I'm not sure how to tell a good one from the rest.?

Also whats the difference between a

Eg:- Land Rover 110 4X4 Cargo Soft Top 10/1988 and Land Rover 110 4X4 FFR Soft Top 11/1988

as listed Buy Military Online - Promotions - GraysOnline Australia

Thanks for any and all help
    Paul

That is a modification plate. When a modification is made to the vehicle, the corresponding number on the plate is defaced.

Oh, a cargo is a base model variant. There are other variants such as RFSV.
FFR means it is fitted for radio. i.e. it has (amongst other things) a 24V power distribution system for powering a radio. The vehicle still operates a 12V system.

Do the Cargo GS's have shorter wheel arch boxes than the FFR? It looks like they may but i can't be sure from the photos.

Most people rush in & get an ordinary one where as, if you research first, you can buy a much better one for the same money.
One of the members on here has produced a buying guide that takes the guesswork out of the process. I found it well worth the price, you might get it in time.
Here is the link. What you need is the $47.50 guide.

One thing worth noting is that the cargo has a rear tailgate whereas the FFR does not. The FFR seems more popular on these forums due to the second alternator and side storage compartments but a rear tailgate may be more important to you depending on your needs. I'd prefer a cargo with a winch if I was allowed another.

    G'Day Paul. Welcome to AULRO.
As stated above, the Mod(ification) plate is a record of approved modifications that can't be lost or damaged by water, unlike the GM120 Service Record (Log) book.
From this plate I can tell you it is a Truck, Cargo, Lightweight (4x4 GS/ troop carrier), without winch.
It is up to date with all required safety and general improvement mods bar fitment of the Windscreen washer nozzle guard. Hardly a deal breaker.

I can also tell you that it has been through a full assessment/ rebuild process. They aren't rebuilt from top to toe and they usually have pretty average bodies and paint. However, all the expensive stuff underneath has been checked and repaired/ replaced if necessary.
This knowledge is all in my Buyers Guide and a whole lot more. The mod plate decoder charts run to 6 pages alone.
The Guide does just that, guides you through the process of deciding/ selecting/ inspecting/ maintaining and improving the Perenties.
I wrote the book because, as an ex-serviceman and operator, I was tired of all the rubbish and mis-information about the vehicles.

    PS,Deejay, thanks for the Recommendation.
    Cheers, BDave.

    Thanks guys.

I'm really after a hard top version. However when they do come up for auction so will every man and his dog.

So I will take a soft top, if the price is right. Whats the average price the last batch where selling for at auction (NSW/Minto).

With so many coming on to the market now and so many buyers almost selling them on straight away. The price must start to drop eventually.

I also think it may be worth getting it private, avoid the buyers 6% and it may even have small things like door locks fitted already hehe. Just a thought, again depends on the auction prices.

    Thanks for the info

Thanks BareFoot, I like the idea of all the "expensive" stuff being chucked and replaced.. Maybe that's the one I will keep my eye on. If I can remember which one it is now.
God help you if you drop your wallet in the back off one during inspection. Now which camo landrover was it again.

    HI,

My advice would be to buy Dave's guide and monitor the next couple of auctions working through the inspections with the guide in your hand, gain some knowledge and get used to looking at them, then when the next auction comes up pick the one you want put a value on it and see how you go, if it goes over your limit try again the next auction.

In my opinion most are not sold on but kept, there has been over 500 sold so far, > 1500 to go, but I think the price has settled down and wont go much lower.

I've bought two, so have a bit of an idea.

Be careful there are some real bad ones that aren't worth going near.......

    regards
    Scott
