    Angry Perentie front half shafts

    Howdy,
After extensive searching i can find bugger all info on the front half shafts, i.e part numbers, where to get them from, is there an aftermarket stronger version and who sells them. Do other rovers have the same fr diff?
Ive snapped one, (I think) and am waiting for my manual to arrive before pulling the front axle apart to investigate. Before people say do a search I have extensively both here and Google and have found nothing absolutely zilch.
any idea of cost of replacement would be good. I understand they both are not the same and i wont know until i pull it apart but i suspect its the longer one, (passenger side), because when i turn it it doesn't sound right / great.
Is this common I've only ever seen it break once and that was on a 6x6 and it was the drivers side fr and they replaced it in no time in the field, literally.
I would appreciate any assistance as i want to get her back on the road
    Much thanks
    Tim

My money is on it being an outer half shaft & it is likely the CV on its way out.
They are a county part number AU2522 ( If my memory is right)!!) & the same both sides.
Ashcroft have heavier alternatives but the County standard one is considered heavy duty as the later Defender ones are not as strong.
It was probably subject to abuse in its Army life to fail.

4x4 perenties share the same drivetrain and axles as a 110 county from 1984-1990.

If it is a halfshaft that is broken and not a CV, don't waste your time sourcing SH or oem-type parts - get some upgraded shafts from Hi-Tough or Ashcroft.

Why are the standard different Ctr weak..what sort of money am I looking at and from where. At least now I know what I'm looking for.
Is there a consolidated parts list for the Perentie s or is it just acquired knowledge? I'm slowly learning I will get there eventually.
Last week ARB quoted $3400 to do fr and rear diff locks. I guess I won't be able to do that for a while now
    Thanks for the info

apart from the chassis and a few other bits you have an 84-90 110 land rover.

Keep an eye out for people selling locked axles. You can often grab a whole axle disc-disc for around 1k including the locker.

The front centre is weak because it has small diameter axles and a diff with a single cross shaft.

The Perentie parts list (known as the Repair Parts Scale, or RPS) is over on REMLR.com at Repair Parts Schedule (RPS) -REMLR . The 4x4 is RPS 02188, the front axle is found in Part 4, the front diff is Section KB (p47), the axle shafts are Section KE (p67).

The differential centre is weak because it is a 2 pinion design with an open carrier. A 4 pinion design with a closed carrier is stronger, but these are only found on the RFSV and 6x6. Ashcroft are also one of the suppliers of HD half shafts as well.

Ashcroft Transmissions do an LSD called the ATB. This is as strong if not stronger than the 4 pinion front carrier, with the added benefit of being an LSD.

Angry Problem found now where to go???

I pulled out the passenger side axle assembly first and all was ok then the short side and it had snapped off at the end of the spline in the ctr. tried to post photo but couldn't work it out.
My options as i see it are,
COA 1, replace broken Half shaft with maybe a Hi=tough approx $265
    plus gaskets oil etc.
COA 2, Replace both half shafts with Hi-tough approx $540 + gaskets etc
COA 3, put a 10 or 24 spline locker and a set of half shafts. I'm guessing the consensus will be go the fine spline.
ARB are doing a special on lockers at $995 and im told the 24 spline is a locker part number RD 128. How can i confirm this is the right one before ordering it, (if that's the route im going).
Can anyone see any pit falls that i am leaving open for myself down the track?
I am not mechanically inept ;however, ive never done this before but with u tube and my trusty manuals i should be ok??? maybe not is it amazingly difficult? are there big things to watch for.
I would love to take it somewhere but that at the moment is not a financial option and to be honest im enjoying the learning curve and the expansion of my understanding. no more calling Bluebell.
Best place to buy half shafts in nth Brissy?
Any thoughts, experience or links would be great.
    Cheers
    Tim

Mate, you are a hop and a step away from MR Automotive in Redcliffe. Talk to Dwayne about your options. No bs.
