    Tow pintle dilemma

Gday folks, i have been slowly modifiying my survey ffr hardtop with pto winch which i bought at minto 18 months ago. Have fitted black sunraysia rims with goodyear fatties and it goes just about anywhere. Fitted power steering off a used disco and used hyd pump off an isuzu truck. Fitted Door locks and key ign. 4new batteries to run my 110l fridge on the 24 volt system(through the original rear box) rhino lock box centre console with uhf and bluetooth stereo( remote speaker boxs). Got a 750kg cooks disc trailer with the deal and put the same black sunraysias and fatties on it. Converted it into a 4wheeler carrier with a wind up camper over the top with a fox wing awning. Soon to be turbo charging the isuzu mill unless advised otherwise.
Question......I want to put a standard 3500 tow bar on it but retain the original pintle for the camp trailer. Has any one done this before? Would like some advice. Cheers. Ps cant use a combination/pintle/ball to tow a normal car trailer as the hitch is too high.

    Hi Will

I won't mention the weight limitation of the perentie.

On my SIII and SIIB Forward Control, plus I'm doing the same to my Perentie 48-852 I acquired one of the vertical recievers as fitted to the civilian 110 and then welded a mounting bracket for the pintle.

On the SIII type we used bolts and nuts, but there is very little clearance for the nut. This time we are going to use thicker steel, perhaps even 1" (haven't done the calculations yet) and tap the thread into the mounting plate.

Here are some images of the SIII adapter.

For the tongue, you either have to angle the ball bracket down a lot or extend it out (or best a combination of both) so the ball coupling clears the end of the pintle.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

If you have got those numbers on your rego, you're lucky and the authorities have used the civilian ratings.

The Army specs have a much lower rating of 900kg, which seems odd when the Cooks and Haulmark trailers designed for the Perentie have ATM of 1200kg.

Perhaps the Army manuals is only talking about the load on the trailers.

Must have been a bit of road rage, but I didn't notice.

    workshop manual

All the info for the calculation of towing capacity can be figured out from the grey folder you should have got with your perentie. Gvm 3600kg gcm 7100kg these calculations give it a 3500kg towing capacity. This is exactly what it says on the rego.

No paperwork with my Perentie, only the receipt and blue slip.

Probably why it was so relatively cheap (even though it had a recent replacement engine, front axle and overhauled gearbox in Feb 2014).

Here's how I've done it on the back of the 101. The NATO hitch is in the original place, and I sourced a receiver from a wreckers. The plate is to carry spare wheels, but you could make something similar to carry a receiver which would be underslung under the x member...
