On the news last night when they showed the army pulling in to set-up the camp for the firefighters down south they showed a Land Rover pulling up. So it would appear they are still in service as well.

Yes of course, they are being phased out over the next 5 years (perhaps 7) with over 3,000 still in service.

the brakes are all changed out, the exhaust gskets are all changed out.

the last gaskets that might potentially be asbestos are in the gearbox.

the decision was made to leave them in place due to
    1. the low number of them that might be asbestos (not all gearboxes will have the asbestos parts)
    2. they are all oil soaked
    3. they are not of a friable nature
    4. they are contained and not open to atmosphere except during overhaul/major repairs
    5. the normal removal procedure for the parts doesn't involve tooling or procedures that is likely to create a release risk.

all that said, follow the handling procedures for asbestos if you're playing with brakes or anything that might have been asbestos, the brake dusts is a potential carcenogenic and the fine dust cause other issues, and you never know if the component you're working on hasnt been treated ot a rattle can rebuild or rebuild by karcher and therefore still has an asbestoes part in it.

Got a letter in the mail from AFM with some nice looking bright yellow asbestos and polyurethane paint warning stickers and a "certificate of authenticity" that the truck is an genuine ex ADF vehicle.
