Tyres - what are people using?

So just looked at my tyres and found that all 4 running tyres are ancient.

    They are olympic steel treks
Front right is dated 03-03 front left 34-06

FL 34-07 and RL is 04-08

so they need to go. As far as I know, 10 years is pretty much the max age you should run a tyre, regardless of the tread condition which in my case is good.

Interestingly, the spare is a new 05-14 Desert Dueler. <edit> looks like it is a Mud & Snow model.

I'm looking at a A/T tyre really. I don't plan on doing any mudding, beach or rock climbing. Just some dusty tracks for the time being.

    Anyone have any recommendations?

The rim code is AY88108 which I believe it tubed-only tyres.

<edit again> done some phoning around and have some additional questions,
what is the rim size? I know it's r16, but how wide are they?
    are they split rims?

The rims are likely to be standard tubed type 16x6 rims, not splits.

I replaced mine with 16x6.5 tubeless 130/wolf rims, and fitted GY Silent Armour ATs 235/85/16. They are quiet, carry heavy loads, have good sidewall strength and a good tread pattern for both traction on and off road work in the dry. They're good for on road traction in the wet, but ordinary in off road wet conditions as it's not a mud tyre.

They'd be AYG8108 which is std perentie rim (tubed) the tyre currently used us 7.50 x 16 Michelin XZL.

6 years is Max tyre life, Army replace after this, Vic Police are starting to enforce this, tyre shops can't re fit /balance etc tyres older then 6 years

    cheers

I'm with rar110 and have a set of wolf rims waiting until I can afford some 255/85 Bighorns.

Ditch those Perentie rims or keep them for show.

Yeah, I nearly had a heart attack when I realized how old they were.

As I am very poor at the moment, new rims are not an option.
I'll have to go with pretty much the cheapest option I can find.

I have a question regarding tyre sizes.
so on the current tyres they say 7.5 r16 lt which I think is the old way of doing tyre sizes. When searching, what would be the equivalent in the new writing?

I think mine are on the verge of the six year mark.

Do the math or find a tire size calculator online. Though people seem to go from 7.50 R16 to 235/85R16, close enough diameter but a little wider.

Can't comment on specific brands, but you might have trouble finding a tire suitable for running tubes? Not sure how common they are...

Someone else should be able to give more details anyway.

Trouble with using tubeless type tyres with tubes is that the tyres often have a pattern on the inside of the tyre which rubs holes in the tubes. Been there done that and got sick of fixing holes in the tube with no puncture. This is more likely at reduced pressures.
You've got a couple of options

Find some tube compatible tube type tyres ~ Michelin?

or run without tubes. The tyres will seal well on the rims it's just that you won't have the extra safety lip on the rim that is supposed to stop the tyre bead coming away from its seat in the event of sudden deflation. I ran a Landy this way for years without problems, but there may be legal issues.

    Scott,

There's nothing in the VicRoads Roadworthiness Requirements (VSI 26) about tyre age. I can understand tyre shops not wanting to fit/balance old tyres partly because of safety issues and partly to generate sales.
