Hi Landymancan,
To engage 4WD, you use the plunger switch on the dash just forward of the main gear stick, marked as 'cross country'. This can be used in high or low range, whenever traction is likely to be imperfect (gravel/mud/rocks/snow etc). A warning light on the dash will blaze starkly at you when engaged.
To engage low range, the stubby lever is pushed forward, there isn't much travel in it but there is a neutral position in the middle. Make sure you are stationary when changing range until you are familiar with the vehicle and its nuances.
