Engine on/off control motor not working, check the fuse under the bonnet near the brake MC. Sometimes it needs to be wiggled to make it work.

If the that fuse is funny, wouldn't it also not start every time?

BTW, the start/stop motor controls a cable, connected to a lever on the injector pump. From memory it's just a little forward of the throttle cable.

The lever is spring loaded to run. So if it's stuck in this position you will be able to start it OK. To manually stop, just reach in and pull the lever for a second or two until the engine cuts out. The lever can be released back to the run position. Note, leaving it in the run position with engine off means if the engine is turned over for any reason (park on a hill without handbrake), it will likely start upon a cylinder hitting compression as the injector will fire.

In short, it's easy to operate manually (and even disconnect cable) if you find yourself in this situation.

Side note - my County didn't have a start/stop motor when I bought it. It was always in "run" position and to stop the car I pulled a cable that was loosely hanging in the dash through a firewall grommet connected to the lever.

Thinking about this further, that whirring noise you hear when you turn the ignition on, should be heard when you turn the ignition of as well (without starting the motor). If you are hearing it both times then that should eliminate the EDIC motor?

Yeah I know the sound you mean and I'm pretty sure that's the EDIC motor. If you hear that at both on and off then it seems unlikely to be a fuse. Maybe an adjustment of the cable in that case. Being spring loaded to run means if the cable stretches, it will still work in run but won't pull the lever enough to stop.

this is an isuzu yes, has the alt been changed or up graded. a very common problem if you can call it that.


turn the key off put your foot on the brakes, or turn the lights on etc. alt needs a diode, back feed

if it was a fuse or edic you would also have problems starting

I had the alternator repaired recently. Will check with the guys but I recall them saying something about the diode.

Thanks for the earlier replies as well guys, sounds like the problem could be much bigger and or complicated than I first thought. Engine starts no problem.

easy to check. just duck out fire her up shut her down if she keeps running turn the lights on. if it then shuts down you know the problem
