The greatest clearance (I think) is when the grease nipple is facing down and the lobes and the joint lobes are furthest apart; albeit the truck was standing normally under self-weight i.e. not supported on car stands. Maybe when supported on stands and the suspension is not under load the clearance is greater?
I had thought too of removing the standard grease nipple using a long socket and installing a long-barrel grease nipple temporarily for greasing, then re-installing the standard one again.
Any thoughts/hints appreciated.
Also whereabouts on the water pump body is the supposed grease nipple for the water pump? I had a quick look the other night and couldn't see it, though the lighting was poor. Again, any guidance appreciated.

Dave, I find the only way to get the grease in properly is to drop the tailshaft, do the 2 unis, refit it and then do the slip joint. It's a bit of mucking around but at least you are sure it's greased properly. The one on the water pump (4x4) is on the top of the water pump housing under the thermo housing.
