    Olympic Steeltrek Tyres

I bought a Perentie 2 years ago and have given it very little use.
It is still fitted with the Olympic tyres it came with.
I've read about how these tyres are too old and may delaminate
but is this theory or has anyone had recent experience one way or another?
I like the tyres but are they going to be unreliable on long trips?

Steeltrek tyres are all dated with month and year of manufacture. Tyres over 10 years old should be considered suspect.

You need to inspect the SteelTrek very regularly. What you are looking for are blisters, small or large in the sidewall or under the tread itself.

Even rub your hand over the tyre and see if you can feel a bump (that is not the tread pattern), if you find one throw the tyre away.

Mike E from Ballarat died a couple of years ago when a SteelTrek, that shouldn't have been on any vehicle blew out, the SIII rolled and he was crushed.

BTW: I'm running SteelTrek on my SIII FFR, Perentie FFR and my Haulmark PT1 1.2 trailer.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    Theory.
I run Steeltreks on the trailers. Occasionally on the Perentie when a spare is needed. I have not had one fail yet.
They don't have a "use by" date, however, it is advisable to keep an eye on their condition, as it is for all tyres. I have a number of Steeltreks out the back that I consider no longer serviceable.
You could go by the motto "If in doubt, throw it out".

    HI,

Yes Mike E was a friend of mine and the day before he was killed I was talking to him about his tyres and looked at them and they were old but no obvious faults.

I have removed ALL my Steeltreks and replaced them with Michelin XZL's a quality tyre, and currently I can get them for $200 +GST that is cheap for a quality tyre and very good insurance.

Army will reject after 6 years (on monthly inspections) if anything looks suspect and removed over 10 years.

week of production and year is stamped on all tyre now, eg 3315 = 33rd week of 2015 ie this week!

If they're old do yourself a favour and replace them

    regards

Those running steeltrek, on there 6x6 be wary of the intermediates when running at GVM. Countless blown tyres.

I believe there were some bad batches come through as well......like Di has said keep an eye on the, check them regularly, I would bin them if they are more than four years old.

I don't know how closely you looked at the tyres.

Another member on here was talking to Mike on the Saturday and saw the tyre that blew out, told him it was unsafe and even offered him his spare. Another of his friends saw him borrowing the tyre off a trailer before he left for Corowa and commented that the tyre didn't look so good.

I have what's left of the wreck of Mike's SIII.

Mike was a great bloke, and a loss to us all. His life shouldn't have come down to a silly error.

Yeah I was really looking a rims because he had a couple of 272309's rims instead of series 3 rims and we where going to swap.

The tyres weren't what I'd be happy driving on..............

Don't know if they're round but you're welcome to them. I can bring to Corowa next year.

we're doing the same thin on the BFG AT's fitted to the gay wagons...

its not just the steel treks that have the problems, its all tyres. Its just easier to restrict entire fleets to cover up for one person or group doing the wrong thing than it is to say "well you're an idiot, you didnt do youre job properly"
