Thread: Perentie GS, power steering installation.

    Perentie GS, power steering installation.

    I have the standard Defender 110 Perentie,GS which I am currently rebuilding after it was damaged in a light roll over, ex ADF Townville.

    As my GS does not have power steering as standard, like the Reconnisence 4x4 version, I bought one of the Power steering units off auction from Grays Auctions.

    My first step will be to get the hydraulics checked, then fit it !

    Which leads to my question, has anyone on the forum gone through this exercise as yet, if so, whats the best way to progress the installation of the power steering unit to its completion.

    Yes.

    Do a search.




    I read as much as I could find, talked to my mechanic, went to a wreckers and got into it. It was a learning experience.

    After you do your research you'll know what parts to buy, hope you're cashed up ��

    Could be cheaper to buy an old County of the era and get the parts and other useful items off it

    Perentie power steering installation

    Good morning,

    Thanks to Badco and 87 County for your suggestions, I read through Badco's thread of 23/12/2014
    and others. I'd say with power steering units out of Government Auctions there will be a lot of Perentie
    owners looking at this option. Cheers.

    Hey everyone,

    Looking at doing my power steering install over the holidays so just wanted to make sure I have everything and that I'm good to go. Then I'll write it up with pictures in this thread.

    Items I have are (all are pre loved):
    4BE/D1 hydraulic pump, mounts to the timing case in place of the blank.
    4 bolt Steering box from Discovery 1
    Reservoir
    Piping, everything that was in the disco
    Engine oil on hand
    PAS fluid

    So, should I get the box reconditioned? I hear it is expensive, more then the box it self.

    Should I be replacing O-rings or other parts on the pump? If so, part numbers? I called Isuzu and they have a overhaul kit that costs more then the pump and won't sell individually except for a upper seal!?

    How am I going to reuse the old solid pipes from the disco? Can you just cut them and use fridgy pipe benders on them?

    Any special tools required?

    Anything else I have missed?

    Sorry for all the questions, just want to make sure I have everything sussed before I start. I'll have a mechanic mate on hand hopefully, he owes me for his new lights in his garage haha. Once I have my power steering all figured out it will be Paultans turn next!

    It cost me about $250 to do mine. I got a pump from a 6bd1 from the wreckers, I already had the steering box, so I just had a line made up to go from the pump to the box, its was so simple and not that expensive. Can pick up a good secondhand steering box for under $200

    how did you do that. Getting the hydraulic lines made up costs more than $250 just by itself.

    ALso, if you find/have a good 4 post box for sale for $200 let me know.

    Those P/S pumps from the auctions seem a bit hit and miss. Had a couple say they were fine, others were bad.
    I actually bought one, and sold it again via Gumtree before I even got it (Had my uncle pick it up from minto for me) guy who bought it knew it was from the auctions and I'd never actually had it in my hands and couldn't say anything about its condition. Turns out it was so bad it couldn't be rebuilt. YMMV

    They modified the existing landrover line, think it was about $80 to do. Pump was about $120 from the truck wreckers, the rest in hoses and fluids. So cheaper than i thought earlier

    Mine cost about $750 from memory.

    Pump $250
    Box (and factory disco pipes) $200
    Hoses $200
    Seals, gaskets and o rings etc
