Gearbox shift tight..

Hi,

The gearbox on my perentie has been notchy and difficult to get into gears since I have had it... though they may all be like that.

I noticed that after a long downhill run in second using engine braking it was very difficult to get it into third or fourth, gears engaged ok but the selection was very stiff like something was binding, up and down movement only, side to side was ok. After I gave ran it for a while in either 3rd or 4th it comes good.

Can anybody say what might be the problem?

Hi Jon, No they shouldn't be like that. First thing I would check is the clutch - is it disengaging properly?. With the engine stopped try putting it through the gears, then start the engine and repeat the process. If it is now more difficult the clutch is dragging and possibly needs a new master and/or slave cylinder or is low on fluid. Does it crunch when going into gear?

Thanks Bearman. Mainly notchiness was present in first and second. Engine going makes not difference. Synchro on third and top is also slow. To be honest the whole thing feels clapped out and if it wasn't so expensive to get it rebuilt I would think about getting that done...
But the new thing I noticed was the binding or whatever in 3rd/4th...

Perhaps it might be worth doing an oil change - it is a reasonably cheap option and an easy one to see if it makes a difference. Possibly a little Nulon in with the oil?

Is there an oil filter inside the gearbox? They get forgotten and can then block the oil flow.

Yes the first thing I did was change the oil and add nulon!

But did you use 20-50 engine oil?

From memory 10W40 is the go...

Either is OK depending on your transmission but gear oil is not.
I do not know about the Nulon though. AFAIR from about 15 years ago, it makes the synchros not engage cleanly. I assume G70.

did you ever sort your problems from this thread out?
If your rear main is leaking into the bell housing, it might be affecting your clutch operation.

have you changed the oil again? If not, change it again, this time make sure you remove the little plastic filter that sits behind the drain plug and make sure it's clear.
Buy one of these and poke it into the hole where the drain plug goes until it hits the far side of the gearbox and make sure there are no large chunks there blocking the filter/oil pump (don't ask me how I know this).

you can also pull the gearbox cover off inside the cab. There is a piece of foam sound insulation that sits underneath the cover around the gearstick that can move and block the stick from moving properly. you can also check for mud/rocks etc sitting on top of the box that may also be making moving the gear stick difficult.

make sure if you change the oil (especially if you put gear oil in) that you change the transfer case oil as well. The same oil MUST be in both the gearbox and transfer case.
