    6x6 door locks - help!

some days you should just stay on the couch....

I figured it was a quick job so I didn't bother moving the beast off the lawn. first mistake. the circlip that holds the window winder holder is now lost.... probably to be found next time I'm mowing when it flies into my shin. or a window.

wrestled with the little plastic thingamajig that holds the door lock surround in place for awhile but managed to get the door skin off without breaking anything.

but now I'm stumped. the interior door lock is connected to what I guess would be the locking mechanism. problem is it doesn't move. no matter what. This makes sense as you wouldn't want to lock the door from the interior when there's no lock on the exterior.... would be somewhat embarrassing I'm sure. But surely no-one would bother actually fitting a linkage to something that was designed to never move?

I can't find any bent over tabs or anything that could be unbent to make it move....

has anyone fitted door looks to a 6x6? what am I missing?

If you look closely at the lock mechanism you will find there is a small weld holding 2 bits together in there. You will have to grind it off before the lock mechanism will work. I had to take mine out to do it but others have done it in situ.

Yes it's in a bad spot and I decided to take the lock out to do it but I know a couple of others have done it without taking it out.

I did it in situ: it was a bit fiddly to get the right angle to file through the spot weld, took me a few hours to do it by hand. It would have been quicker if I had a power tool small enough to get at the weld.

The only issue I've had is the screw at the back of the barrel started to work loose after a bit of use, a bit of loctite before it goes together takes care of that.

Funny you should say that, When at daughters last I was asked to lock the door as it could be looked into. When I went to unlock the barrel came out with the key, Was lucky the screwdriver opened the door.
Then I put the barrel back it clicked in, When back at the van some 20 ks away NO BARREL. @#$% was said twice. A day later the daughter rang and asked if I had lost a shiny thing , she picked it up out front in the street ,yep got the thing back.

got half off the weld ground through with the dremel.... but i can't get the rest of it due to the dremel shaft hitting on the door frame. and can't see how i'd get a normal grinder in there. and I'm far too lazy to use a file!
    absolute pain in the proverbial...

it's gunna have to wait until I have the time to pull the whole bloody door apart.

Is there a linkage between the barrel and the locking mechinism that somehow goes around the window? Mine seem to be missing...

Yes there is a short linkage that goes in between. It is missing from the army vehicles as the locking mechanism is disabled. You will either have to order it separately if you already have the key barrels or do what I did and buy complete new door handles with locks and linkages. They are interchangeable with Defender parts from the similar vintage.

    Thanks for that!
I managed to figure out what the missing links were and tracked a few down, cut the weld and freed the lock up, but now I've come upon another odd problem...!

The passenger door won't lock while while its open, meaning i have to close it before i can lock it (which isn't really a problem)
the drivers door will lock and unlock fine while it's closed, but it does lock while open and if i close it while locked(don't even need to hold the button in like most car doors) the latch seems to jam and i can't put enough pressure on the key to open it from the outside, i have to climb in from the passenger side and force the lock up to unlock it...
I'm assuming one of 3 things,
-either it somehow has 2 different versions of the latch mechanism which are both working fine,
-or one isn't working properly, but i'm not really sure how they're ment to work so i have no idea of which one is broken!
-they're both broken/gummed up in different ways and are ment to work like a normal car door

    Any ideas?
