    Fuel sender: FYI cheap(ish) fix.

    Hi all,

I'm not sure how many problems people are having/had with their fuel gauges, but I have already changed the gauge in my perentie due to it not functioning..
When I topped it up it then misbehaved, got stuck right over to >full due to presumably an open circuit. I've seen on the forums that a new sender is about $400.

I noticed the mechanism is very similar to a VDO 220.003 and taking a bit of a chance I bought one of these for $85. Fortunately the mechanism is indeed exchangeable although the sender itself is slightly different it was easy enough to slide the mechanism off and swap them. So far it works fine, but of course I won't know how accurate it will be until the tank is empty/full. There are instructions with the unit regarding setting it up for the depth of tank in terms of length of the float arm and height of the pivot. I presume it is really a generic sender unit.

    Thanks for this Jonnooh
Very useful. I will be very interested to see how accurate it is
I have modified one from an early Defender and it is not accurate enough because I had to modify the arm
Does your low level light work?

Hi Phil, no the light does not work. I completely forgot about that by the time I went and bought it; probably got too excited. I did consider that I could search some more and find one with the low fuel level.

It is adjustable so if not accurate you can play with it. I read the instructions after I installed it (as you do) so I don't know if it is adjusted as per this; however everything is in the same position as the defunct sender so I am hoping it will be okay. If not I will get it out and adjust.
