    Lifting axle on 6x6?

    I am not sure if 6x6 questions should be on here or the leaf sprung section

    Has anyone looked into an axle lift system on a 6x6?

    No idea on your question, but are the truck lifted axles driven? I always assumed they were lazy as they don't spin when lifted.

    Also, wouldn't lifting the rear axle effectively change the distance from the rear axle to the rear of the vehicle, which will affect turning swept path (and possibly ADR compliance)?

    They are not driven when lifted. Just as a 6x6 rear axle is not usually engaged.

    It would reduce turn radius and scrubbing when turning. In addition to overall reduction in tyre wear and probably fuel consumption as well.

    Yes it would change effective dimensions, however there is a precedent for that with newer trucks on the market, so I can't see the legal issues being insurmountable.

    I was thinking of that years ago but put it in the" too hard basket"
    I fitted free wheel hubs instead.

    we thought about this when we were driving them for a living....short lived thought as we were not paying for tyres and the grunts happily changed them for us

    the leaf spring arrangement would make it near impossible........maybe remove the rear wheels and chain up the axle.....not real practical

    replace the shock with a double acting Ram.

    oil and nitrogen to an accumulator from one side

    oil from an accumualtor with a pump and selectable bypass on the other.

    lock out the bypass and pump up the oil to the RAM and it lifts the wheel. open it and it acts like a standard shock absorber.

    easy way is to replace the leaf pack that naturally raises the axle.
    Then use a second method like air bags to lower the axle to carry the load.


    lot of other methods.


    the length of the body compared to wheel base and loading has to be checked. tray length these days allow much more over hang than was allowed in the 6X6 days.
