Bidding on a Perentie- few questions

Hi All. I currently run a 98 Disco. I am however very interested in a Perentie. I am currently looking online on a few Perenties in a NSW auction and currently have a bid in.. No physical inspections are possible, due to Covid.
One vehicle up for auction has no canvas roof at all. With the others it is hard to tell from photos what condition the canvas roof is in. I am wondering about cost and availability of replacement canvas. Can anyone tell me if they are available and at what approximate cost?

In this auction none of the vehicles are described as having service books or any sort of written history. It is also stated that kms shown on odometer may not be accurate as the instruments may have been changed by the army. Wondering if anyone out there has sufficient knowledge of army service practices to know whether these vehicles would have been regularly serviced and how likely it is that kms shown are accurate.

Any other tips for what to look for/ avoid would also be welcome.

    Cheers All.

Bidding on a Perentie- few questions

Allow $1.5-2k for a full canvas depending on what you want. Several manufacturers are available
Service history is not usually an issue but bear in mind that you are bidding on a 30+ year old vehicle. It is bound to have some faults
Bodywork and interiors will be old/worn.
All faults are repairable by a DIY mechanic with no special tools except the gearbox which can cost up to $5k to overhaul
You will probably be up for $2k to replace tyres and rims if you don’t like the standard tyres they come with.
    Good luck!!!

Isn't there extra costs to get the RWC such as keyed ignition and door locks?

It’s a tough call - there are some good ones at auction but there are some stinkers also.

Have you looked at the private market?

With private you can test drive it, crawl over it and hopefully the owner has sorted any small issues and fitted keys.

    Just a thought.

Out of interest, what are they making at auction over there now? And are there many left? I was bidding on a few when I lived in Adelaide, and I thought they had gotten too expensive when they crept up to over 10k! There is a bloke asking $43k for one here in NZ at the moment...of course he has had a few people tell him 'he's dreamin'!!

The current auction - 4 days to go, 4x4’s sitting on $14k+ - most of them without roadworthy and “not running”

The prices recently have been 18-19k minimum for 4x4’s - which is a little crazy for a 30 year old vehicle.

Ouch indeed mate. To think that I backed out of bidding on some when they reached $8k a few years back! Seems cheap now! Or we have been conditioned.....
