    Just bought a Perentie

    Hi All. I have just paid a deposit on a Perentie. Will pick up this weekend and drive slowly back to Perth.

    Owner has provided lots of photos and video footage. This is a 90 model. Photos show a fold down shelf running along the left side of the vehicle, parallel with the top of the tub. Does this give any clues as to what variant the vehicle is or the specific duties the vehicle was used for by the Army?

    It needs a new canopy and I am looking to get a Team Perentie canopy. On that site the question is asked whether I have a GS or FFR variant. Is anyone able to explain difference in model types and how do I know which variant I have?

    Thanks All. Assistance will be appreciated and I will contribute where I can once I start tinkering with the beast.

    Congratulations on purchasing what remains the best off road vehicle ever made.

    The rear covers are slightly different for each variation which is why you were asked what it is. The two major variations are FFR and Cargo ( or GS). As originally sold the FFR would have 4x12V batteries, and an ammeter and hour meter to assist managing the 24v radio system, the GS will have 1x12V battery.

    If you want genuine, the original canopy manufacturer (Robco) still sells them.

    The easiest way to help us identify which variation you have purchased is for you to post the photos for us to see it.

    This thread would be better placed in Coil Sprung Military area. This section is really aimed at just the things specific to Isuzu powered models (even though many posters post stuff that should be in the Defender area).

    Hi Mate,

    I will try to answer your questions - however pictures would certainly help.

    GS - stands for General Service.
    FFR - stands for Fitted For Radio.

    The GS has a tailgate as standard. The FFR does NOT have a tailgate.
    The GS has 2 x rear lockers (one one each side) for things like tools and jacks. The FFR also have these.
    The FFR also has 2 x side lockers at the front of the tub (one on each side). Each one of these lockers has 2 x batteries (to help run the radio equipment).
    The GS can have long bench seats inside the rear tub, inwards facing.
    The FFR doesn't have these bench seats - it can have 2 x small seats (inward facing) at the rear of the tub.
    The FFR has a power distribution box in the rear tub - that the radio equipment runs off.
    The FFR has a second 24volt alternator in the engine bay - the GS does not.
    The FFR has brackets on the side of the vehicle - 2 each side, that the radio aerials mount onto.

    The quickest and easiest way to tell - if the vehicle is standard - does it have a tailgate? Then it's a GS.

    Please note though - you can modify a FFR to have a tailgate, some people do this.

    Also note - once the vehicle has been in private ownership, anything is possible! It might have started life as one model, but has been modified to look like another.

    The shelf that you speak of is not standard - sounds like a modification to me.

    Oh - have a look at the REMLR website, which is Register Ex Military Land Rovers - there is quite a bit of information on that site also.

    When you go to the REMLR site, register there and add your vehicle details.

    Also look at the Library. You’ll find the illustrated parts lists. You can search them by using Ctrl-F.

    When I was at KLR Automotive last week, I saw they had a bag of stickers which advise not to exceed 80km/h in order to avoid hearing damage. I nearly stole one for my Range Rover. The next time I'm out there, I'll take a pic.
