Does the CV joint have to be knocked further onto the shaft a little to allow a circlip to be removed from the end of the shaft that is normally covered by the CV joint?
I am trying to remove the CV from the long side inner shaft. Its off a 6x6 Perentie and I want to see if its the same as the CV,s I have in my camper .I have forgotten what Mal did when he put the diff locks in but a mate tells me they are probably S3 stage one CV,s.
I want to carry a spare for my upcoming trip and thought these Perentie ones might work.
I cant get the shaft out. Tried putting the shaft in a vice and hitting the CV with a hide hammer. No go.
Next I cut a bit of galv pipe a bit longer than the shaft, butted it up under the CV and slammed it onto a steel plate but still no go.
Any other tricks?
Keith

The CV wont move either way. As I understand it ,as the circlip is a round section, tapping on the CV is supposed to allow the circlip to contract into the groove and let the CV slide over it. I am into series and uni joints and have no experience with CV,s till now.
OK, Thanks, I will give that a go in the morning.

I still think that if there is spare spline on the inside of the CV joint then the CV joint is meant to slide onto the shaft further to allow the circlip to be removed. However if happy to slide the CV joint off the end of the shaft then use a press on the shaft to push it through.

Gave up on the long axle so pulled the short one.
Put the pipe over the short shaft and dropped it on the concrete. The shaft popped straight out so dont know what gives with the other one.
If anyones interested the spline count is 24 diff end , 23 female CV and 24 outer for flange. Thats the same count as the Series 3 Stage one. Now I have to pull mine to compare lengths.
These CV,s look brand new and there is no sign of any wear on the bronze bush. Hope the length is the same or can be worked around.

Well I pulled my short side cv out and compared them. Identical except the Series 3 outer shaft is about 4.5 mm longer.
From the end of the stub axle to the centre of the circlip groove with the axle pulled out is 33.3 mm using the perentie CV. The same measurement with the Series 3 CV is 38mm.
The photo is with the hub assembled with the Perentie CV in it. The circlip groove is just hidden as the axle is now pulled out as far as it will go.
All it needs is a few mil turned off the outer of the flange and all would be fine. To put a series 3 cv back in again, replace the flange with a couple of spacers under the circlip. In the bush one could even just grind it off with an angle grinder until the circlip fits. Its not critical.

Here is a pic of the joints side by side. The longer axle is the Perentie one of course.
