Iridium 9555 are excellent. The older 9505a handsets are still available but a lot bulkier.

Haven't heard a lot of good feedback about the Thuraya (spelling?) sets in the last 6 months though there were a number of people with them on the forum a while back saying they were OK. Everyone I talk to up here uses an Iridium of one kind or another.

If you only need the phone for a short trip I'd look at rental as they are expensive items.

Can't help for a location in Melbourne but Satellite Hire in Darwin deal Australia wide and are very good.

I used to hire from this group when I needed them. Good and reasonable in hiring. Now I just spunge off a mate that has one.... much more reasonable...

Just out of interest pete, what are they quoting you? A mob down my way said $225 for two weeks + calls - didn't sound all that bad for piece of mind.

There was a place in Box Hill we hired from 4 years ago at $11 per day, and they threw in a free EPIRB for the fortnight. Their rate was about half of what everyone else charged, but I can't remember what they're called.

Last year I wanted one for a w'end, but they changed their policy to hiring for a minimum of a week or something like that. I ended up hiring of an aulro member.
